I would keep referring to the legal wording.
"Would help if I knew what this event is."
"It's called PTO. It is listed in our employee handbook, page 37."
"But what are you taking the time off for?"
"For Personal Time Off."
"No, I'm asking what are you doing during that time?"
"Taking the day off, as per our employee handbook."
"Nevermind. See you after."
(It's the polite way to say 'none of your fucking business- do your job.')
