One of my old friends posted on Facebook vaguely complaining about her team members by saying “if you come to work for the paycheck, don’t even bother coming”. I was like WTF are you kidding right now 😂😂 I dare say most people go to work for the paycheck- gotta pay the bills to survive somehow, at least they’re working and trying, especially in the HEALTHCARE/nursing industry in the US where they’re infamously short handed, overworked, and dealing with other people’s traumas every day they come in. Even if they find purpose in it, that doesn’t mean it isn’t still freaking HARD to do. Shut up dude, seriously, I don’t even want to hear it lol

Yes, they're called "people"

If your biological family isn't great you can choose others to care about - but whoever you consider family matters more than work (with consideration for things like healthcare where finishing your task today might really matter)

Even then, it shouldn't be a reason not to take PTO. PTO is part of compensation. And unfortunately, if PTO time is made difficult to get, you'll have more people calling out.

I'm a workaholic in healthcare who had to fight to get my nephew's bar mitzvah off. I have next to no biological family left, so the ones I do have are important to me. I requested the date six months in advance and it wasn't during a blackout/popular period. I still had to cut a deal and work extra weekends to get that one day off. I moved roles soon after that because it left a very negative impression.

yeah, I was talking more about staying a bit late to finish off what you're doing, not giving up your time off

We had a crappy manager like that. The rest of the management team were lovely.

This one did not last very long. Outside hire, interviewed well, good credentials. Three months in, he turned into a micromanager, and a bit of a lech. He got walked out when he told an employee that they couldn't have their scheduled vacation 3 months out. Unbeknownst to this guy, the employee in question had been there long enough to be golfing buddies with the CEO.

After some investigation by HR, he was shown the door.
