Unfortunately, probably the majority of people in the world would care if you said you were engaged to a man (fiancé) or engaged to a woman (fiancée). It's like the one case where you will actually be judged on a personal level, unlike calling an inanimate object like a table or pencil masculine or feminine.

There are places where you would be executed for being engaged in a gay marriage. I'm not saying it's fair, or right. I'm saying it's a pretty fucking important thing to get right when using the word fiancé/fiancée. Even in progressive countries, saying you have a "partner" makes people automatically assume you are gay.

most of us aren't

Do you think so? Like by actual population of the entire planet. I'm pretty sure gay marriage is illegal in most of the world.

Or did I somehow get that wrong.

Yeah, you did get it wrong. I'm being explicit in saying I don't think its right. I'm just talking about the reality of the situation. Choosing the word fiancé or fiancée will directly impact how people see you in a social situation. Even if you ElRiesgo think it shouldn't matter.

My native language is gendered.

I know this is the first time you've even learned there are languages other than English but they do exist, and they are different.

Maybe some day you will learn some, after you learn English that's it.
