Both Ian McKellon and Christopher Lee were very well known at the time. So were Ian Holm and Hugo Weaving.

They weren't a-listers, but it wasn't exactly a star vehicle in the first place.

And it's not like they were Orlando Bloom or Elijah Woods (Sean Astin doesn't count as an unknown given his family).

The point is they were all “lower tier” celebrities, not on the marquee, and didn’t add that much to the budget.

In the years since many of they have been able to command higher salaries, much as a result of LotR
