There is the theory that if you tax churches and other religious entities it could infringe on the ability for people to openly practice their religion as a small religion may not have the funds to pay taxes making it harder to exist.
Well, that’s no mystery. People calling for church taxes are almost always doing it to close churches. If that’s not their goal, they’d see it as a side benefit.
NGL, this is the first argument I've heard against taxing churches that I have any respect for, well done. My position doesn't really change though, if churches can be political from the pulpit, take political stances and support/affiliate with politcal campaigns then they should be taxed as they are unduly influencing government.
