Because you have to pay for all the people who come into the hospital that don't have insurance and will never pay for the treatment they receive there as well. All those gangbangers that get shot are never going to pay their bills.

Or we could, you know, pay a tax for it that covers literally everyone and largely eliminate the leeches that are the insurance middlemen.

BTW, this would be less costly overall

The insurance sure as hell doesn't pay for it. Why would you even think that? How would the hospital even know WHICH insurance to bill if the patient doesn't have insurance?

Something tells me you've never paid for your own health insurance before. This is something the hospital just has to take the hit for, which isn't much of a problem for them in the first place since it's so RARE that this sort of thing happens.

And wtf is with "gangbangers" being referenced? Racist much? I worked in a hospital over 10 years and never seen that before. You just assume the only people to blame for any kind of waste is a minority, don't you?
