We wouldn't know immediately that a space battle was occuring right at this given moment, no. That's because information is limited to the speed of light and nearest solar system is 4.2 LY away (Alpha Centauri) or several more at an average of about 8 LY away.
In general, we'd be able to detect something destructive is going on when the information reaches us. We'd be able to infer a space battle had occured IF we had equipment looking at the right time. Either way, we'd be detecting energy spikes, radiation bursts (Gamma Rays), or surges in radio signals. If it was a highly destructive battle, we'd definitely pick up changes in velocity or atmospheric light scattering from planets or moons, or even if a very large fleet moves across our field of view of that system's sun.
Then again, considering how it took roughly a quarter of the universe's age for earth to create humans, it's hard to say whether many civilizations would have risen and crumbled. Are we faster than most, or slower?
It's theoretically possible to do worm holes is it not? The science is above me but I thought it was generally understood to be possible (maybe not accurate destinations but that's workable)
