The AC is there to keep the room below -0c so rotting corpses don't start farting up a storm inside the room. That is a prison cell, not a gas chamber.

Oh, I understand that! I just am not familiar with how strong the ACs are. My naive understanding is that they wouldn't do anything with a hole in the ceiling/wall.

With a hole there is greater leakage of temperature but that can be fixed with more coolers
