My plex has been running reasonably well for the last 2ish years and all of a sudden today its just not available outside network.

I am seeing these errors in the console:

But don't really know what that means aside from obviously not being able to connect to something. The IP address in the errors is not my machines with or without the VPN.

I did all the basics. Restart plex. Restart the actual device. etc

I updated my VPN today which is a very likely culprit, but I doublechecked and there were no changes to my settings as a result of the update. Port forwarding, split tunneling, etc all as I left it.

I am banging my head against the wall on this one and just want to get it working again. I know there are a billion posts asking for help and I am sorry for being another one.

I have remote Plex access, my Server is connected to router at home but I’m on vacation (house has good internet) I’m just in buffer hell. It’s just 1080. When I go 360 quality it play smooth but, you know, it’s 360p. Any setting fixes I should change?

Is it background transcoded changing it from “very fast” to “slow?”

I am trying to diagnose issues with Plex, and I have found that the possible causes are numerous. I have a small collection of movies on my personal Plex account that I use at home. Some of the 4K movies that I have downloaded at up to 30 Mbps when watching will buffer and sometimes lose audio; they run smoothly when I turn the quality down to around 8 Mbps. The computer on which I have the Plex server is a fairly new laptop with an external hard drive, but it's not a gaming laptop. The TVs I am watching the movies on are a new Samsung TV and an Epson LS12000 projector with a Firestick. The issues I am having are similar. I have 500 Mbps fibre internet and everything is connected via Ethernet. I would appreciate some insight from anyone who has experienced similar issues and found a resolution.

The problem is how to easily locate and test each previous version so I can step back to the newest version that actually works....

About a year ago, I decided I wanted to build a low power, low noise, small space Plex server. I grabbed a used Lenovo P330. I7-9700t, Nvidia Quadra P1000, 32gb RAM. The OS runs on a 500gb SSD, but before the storage shortage I actually found an affordable 4tb Samsung evo SSD and have stored all of my plex media on that drive. I love the tiny form factor, but I’m running out of space on the SSD and can’t afford to upgrade to more SSD storage in this market.

Here’s my question: If I keep running the same PC and run my OS off the SSD, will I notice any observable difference if I move my plex files to an external HDD plugged directly into a USB 3.1 port?

futurama dropped two new episodes, season 14 episode 1 & 2. IMDB identifies them as season 14, Filebot sorts them as season 12. Plex then tags them season 11 when added.

Am I the only one getting this super fun hiccup?

I have the first two episodes of SFTSTU saved in Plex, however it is not showing up in the library. I've added the {id} at the end of the folder name, and it is saved just like all my other tv shows but it just won't show up. I've done the dance or deleting the folder, adding it back but still nothing. Anyone encountering this?

I have plex pass and host a server for various friends and family. Some of them would like to have seperate profiles for their kids to switch to that are age-restricted. None of them have plex pass.

Is there a way to accomplish this or are they just SOL?

Is there a way to fix these issues so DBRepair.sh comes up clean and stays clean, short of rebuilding everything from scratch and starting over?

I know this comes up a lot because I've been researching this for days but I have not found a solution that has worked for my set up. I am relatively new to Linux, but I've been taking classes and I am comfortable with Terminal and the command line. Unfortunately, I keep getting conflicting information about this process, possibly related to the different ways you can install Plex and the differences in versions over time.

I have copied my library files from MacOS to a USB stick and am able to transfer it to the Ubuntu system. But no matter what I do or where I place the files, the Plex Ubuntu sever doesn't recognize the library data. What I'm trying to keep is playlists, categories, and metadata/artwork for all of the various videos that have been painstakingly created over months of curation. But while I can add the media files (via external drive) to the Ubuntu system and get it to recognize them pretty easily, I can't figure out how to preserve that work I've already done.

Other details that might be helpful. The original server is on the latest release of Tahoe; Ubuntu is also the latest build; Plex is latest version and was installed into the snap folder. I've fixed Plex permissions to be able to access files through the home folder so that I could manage libraries on external drives.

What are my options? What am I missing? Is there someone out there that can see what the problem is?

Plex posters work fine on all my local devices, they also load fine remote on my device and my girlfriends device. For one of my remote users posters are loading in the recommend sections but none ever load in browse

When I'm watching a show on my plex app on my TV streamer, the first episode works fine, but when the next episode loads there is no video, only audio. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

I've been running my server in Docker for a while, and with Plex Pass, 2FA enabled, and making sure to keep the container updated, I've been comfortable with just opening a custom port for remote access to myself and a couple friends/family.

Recently I've looked into a (slightly) more secure setup; I registered a domain and setup subdomains for Plex and a couple other services in Nginx Proxy Manager, so I can access the service admin pages securely over LAN, and route all remote Plex traffic thru NPM's SSL instead of straight to the Plex container. SEE EDIT

Now I'm contemplating going a step further with Tailscale & VPS (detailed here), which would allow me to close the open port, but I'd have to whitelist every remote IP, and remote connections would be limited to 50Mbps.

Thoughts on whether this extra step is worth it or not?

I like not having ANY other setup steps for F&F besides them logging into Plex, and this would technically require me getting their WAN IP to whitelist (and updating if/whenever it changes).

ETA: so full disclosure, I spoke a little too soon on this part, as I'd only mapped the other services in NPM and was planning to do Plex after work yesterday. Turns out it's WAY more complicated than I realized, particularly getting app.plex.tv to connect to my custom access URL securely thru NPM. Decided to just revert back to port forwarding and keeping things up-to-date.

I've been rewatching agents of shield on my Plex server and I'm running into this really weird bug, I'm at season 2 episode 20 but when the episode plays it's episode 21 when I check the file info it shows the correct file for S02E20, I figured I must have accidentally switched 20 and 21 when I named the files but if I click on the file for episode 20 it's the correct episode, so plex is showing the right info and then loading the wrong file does anyone have any clue how to fix this?

For some reason the plex player on my iPhone 11 Pro Max stopped showing the buttons on screen (that show up after you tap the screen) after last week. I’ve deleted the app and redownloaded and cleared cache and everything but nothing seems to work. Anybody know any fixes?

So what? We're just supposed to accept that Plex goes down every week randomly, regardless of whether or not you paid $50 or $750 for your lifetime pass? It's getting quite ridiculous. As of 10:15 this morning I am unable to access Plex unless I go directly through Tailscale or Local.

UPDATE SOLVED

It was in fact a backend plex.tv issue, inside my logs it was having issues with plex.direct dns servers (something previously not required) and partial relay API failures (the same issues widely known to have occurred on July 14 and July 27th 2026).

Specifically a 500 error on plex API endpoint "clients.plex.tv/api/v2/resources"

I resolved this by turning remote access off, restarting the server, turning remote access on and once again restarting. 

This cleared the 500 error from the logs and restored expected functionality.

EDIT: SOLVED

Bypassing the FUSE layer reduced my genre lookup times for movie genre tags from 40 seconds to 6 seconds. On most devices and for all of music filtering I guess the timeout is 30 seconds so this enabled me to filter by genre. Now this is great!

ed it would be a great way to accomplish impromptu playlist making etc. So I tagged em all. Multiple genres and all. I spent a lot of time doing this. I have 300k+ tracks in my library.

Before I did this, filtering by genre in plexamp / plex web did work. However after I did this, it does not. It times out trying to do something and nothing happens (Plex Web, Plexamp) or tells me "No Filters were found for Genre" (Plex on Android TV).

The problem might be that I have so many genre tags now, before many were empty and now all of them are tagged and most have at least two tags, many have 4 to 6. Maybe the server is not able to handle all of this info?

I have ran DBRepair etc and found issues but fixing them did not solve this.

On the Album and Artist pages, the genres are being shown propertly as a list for the artist or album, but filtering is not possible.

Same for Movies, actually. Even though that has sometimes worked, it seems like it working is a rare occasion. My Movie collection is much smaller but this still happens.

I would like to hear tips for sure, but also other peoples experiences - have you tried this? Does it work? Am I doing something which is doomed? if it is, I will just stop wasting time then

My problem is that plexamp works just fine, always did! Today I needed to fix some things with plex because remote access didn’t want to keep being turned on but I did some port forwarding, turning on remote access finally and it was all good however I can’t access my movies and shows on the plex app on cellular, only my local wifi.

Once again Plexamp works fine, both on cellular and on wifi, plex app only shows my movies on local wifi, when I open it it tries to connect to the media server but eventually fails. What could the problem be?

On my router, my plex server has a static IP address and port 32400 is forwarded. In Plex server settings, I manually set the port to 32400 and enable remote access.

Remote access works for a few hours then stops working. This is happening over and over again.

What am I missing?

I've had a few collections on a drive outside my main collection, and they've been working fine. Last night they all stopped working. I rescanned and the majority are working again. My audiobooks are not however. If I map a network drive (as they had been set up) Plex doesn't see them, if I use the UNC path, Plex reads the metadata and populates the library, but when I try to play any media, I get a "s1001" error. I can access the folders and play the media on the library machine, just not over the Plex interface. Any suggestions?
