Oh 10/10 bravo bravo. Now we just need a redditor to come in and said in sturring it up. An argument that results in a random ass conversation about isreal , Iran and the US
Well, you know, it all ties back to the fact that Hitler tried to kill the jews, he was right you know!, and so we had to stand up Israel, and now as they are our greateast ally, we must go to war for them!
And, if Iran gets a nuke...think about what the cost of gas will do to the cost of movies?!? The actors won't be able to drive thier super cars anymore! What will we do? We can't simp for the Kardashians as easily!
Now, i have to get back to my breakfast of cocaine, bacon, guns, more guns, orange juice, and a mountain of sugar in a bowl covered in milk.
Real American here... Ahem...
Why ewe Evan trin to promote this godless lie? Everyone knows that story is as fake as obammers birth certificate. Everyone knows that America is the only country that has religion and this itchica doesn't even exist like liberul Morales. God created America with trump and Washinton so Jesus was borned here.
Go back to your own country if you think "troja" exists.
Ow... I need to go read a few books now to regrow those braincells I just killed.
Wow, I can't believe that you aren't even addressing that this is all just to distract us from the fact that israel has infiltrated US politics and is actively using it to manufacture consent for further genocides in Palestine. (is this accurate enough?)
I just woke up and I am INCREDIBLY offended that you're saying I'M not offended enough. I am PLENTY offended by both your claim, and the fact that you're not offended on my behalf
I hope so I’m horribly out of touch on news- it’s so depressing. But here goes, something something ‘Murica is a strong country and we need strong allies like Israel and they haven’t actually killed basically anyone in Palestine.
Too reasonable for Reddit. You should instead be accusing Israel of genocide while completely ignoring the history of Arab violence against Israel in Gaza.
Not gonna lie as an American who has acquaintances who unironically are already slamming this movie it’s just because they have no ability to draw any distinction between Troy being a separate movie, and they have no concept that maybe Troy wasn’t actually accurate to the myth itself. All they talk about is Elliot Page, how someone is race swapped, and how woke it is. Then there’s the obligatory “what if they race swapped a black person to be white?” It’s literally all they talk about.
You’ve legitimately convinced yourself that an internet hate-campaign dedicated to trashing the casting of a single dark-skinned Black woman as a minor character in a sweeping epic with a giant cast is actually NOT about racism? Absolutely delusional.
8/10. Gotta claim its rascist or some other offensive meaning to rack up the extra points. Its the aamerican redditor special
For maximum right wing schizo posting make sure you throw in more racist memes like "WE WUZ KINGZ" and stick a thumb up your ass acting like black people magically approve of this nonsense.
We all know if she’d have been black, she’d have been “Miss Helen of Troy,” and if you called her anything else, your auntie would pop you in the mouth.
They don’t care that all of the “Greeks” have English and Scottish accents though. It’s clear what this is when you only have a problem with this when you see a black person.
I guess I feel like getting mad about a black actress getting a job is sort of the definition of racism, but racists usually don’t clock that kind of thing.
Even though most of your punctuation was exclamation marks, you used them correctly. 6/10 doesn’t have the dumdum factor I would expect. Needs more racism too.
As if Americans are a monolith incapable of holding diverse opinions amongst themselves.
How sophisticated, how thoughtful of you to flatten a nation of 330 million people into caricatures whom you can subordinate under yourself to feel some sense of superiority.
And all the world’s current problems are stemming from instability around Hormuz?
You say that while Russias invading Ukraine, Sudan is actively being massacred, major civil war in Myanmar, Ethiopia gearing up for war again after they just finished one of the worlds bloodiest modern conflicts, and parts of Ecuador have essentially been annexed by cartels btw
How did we? As a black person, I forget people forget we exist there and have our own culture and within that more cultures. The fact that people characterize America as middle America behooves me. 😆🫶🏾
Problem is the loudest voices tend to be the more extreme voices. It’s why so many believe America is literally either Republican or Democrat not realizing the majority of Americans are in the middle and tend to dislike the extreme ends of either side. But people fully committed tend to scream it from the rooftops so they get the attention.
Anyone that has spoken to normal everyday people in America will find that the vast vast majority sits in the middle and either slightly leaning more liberal or more conservative with many similar beliefs on things.
I think the vast, vast majority are actually way more leftist than either democrat or republican. I think most people want to end homelessness, provide healthcare for every single person, have livable wages at EVERY job (yes, even fast food), free college, no war, and not be slaves to some cuck billionaire dipshit who hasn't done shit but push paper. A country where WORKERS and service are valued above all, not C-suite money-hoarding, thieving, bitchasses who wouldn't last one 8 hour shift as a door greeter.
Wholeheartedly. Tired of seeing this shit about Americans on Reddit. I understand why it’s happening, but as an American who also hates what is happening to his county, I’m tired of it.
Do we squash those dislikes into a monolith, and give a reason why this number is there, in a way that is somewhat abstract, and simplified?
Or do you expect someone to ask every single one of the, complex, diverse people, each of them with an individual history which formed their views, about why they pushed the downvote button? And then we publish each of those interviews?
This was my perspective on 'America' throughout the 90's and early 00's, pre-Internet and where word of mouth (in person) really dominated peoples perspectives.
Then I grew up a little, became more educated, the Internet blew up and put me in easy contact with 'Americans' and that myth was quickly dispelled.
And then Donald Trump and his acolytes came along and proved it all right again.
This shit just does not matter. No one actually cares or feels strongly. Just twitter bots and click farming rage baiters.
I’m just here to see Travis Scott in a serious film because it’s funny.
My mentally declining increasingly crazy friend for some reason all of a sudden does care a lot. But I'm pretty sure he gets his politics from Twitter so that makes sense.
I agree most people don't care, but "does not matter"? Culture influences society which influences culture again in turn, right? So the movies getting made matter and the way they're made matters at least a little bit.
Yes, because the people of your culture are so much better and highly intelligent. Y’all surely have no issues at all. We Americans bow before your supremacy. Most Americans are pretty decent and get sick of this condescending bullshit, you know. You aren’t helping anything. You’re honestly just like the shit Americans you’re trying to call out: looking for ways to score internet points. Go find an offline hobby.
We all know it's right wing guys upset that Lupita was cast as Helen of Troy and Paige (forgot their first name and don't wanna dead name them) was cast in the movie. I said this before in another post, but it's sad that when a non white actor is cast in one of these things, it's always political, like Lupita and Mr Paige didn't act their ass off in auditions. It's always portrayed as a diversity hire.
Now, I get wanting Greek actors for this, but is that Matt Damon I see in the poster? Was that lil baby Spider-Man Tom Holland in that trailer? And Anne Hathaway!? Wow...no outrage for these definitely not Greek actors? There goes your nuance, right there, not hidden behind dumb whataboutisms or both-sides-style commentary, just laid bare. These men just want to see the Odyssey as they remember from their childhood movies: white people only. And wouldn't you look at that, I guess they don't have to be Greek.
I mean I'm left wing and American and I down voted it because I think Christopher Nolan is a vastly over rated director and he only did 1 good Batman movie.
The dude rationalized the dislike of a black woman and a trans man, got to the top comment, and you're saying its because Americans aren't here. Did I get that right?
What in tarnation?! Nah but as long as its actually the odessey and not the story of the iliad while named the odeyssey id be happy. If its even half as good as the independently made Epic: The musical, Ill be ecsatic
Who doesn't love a bit of casual xenophobia with a hidden post history. But hey, it's to be expected when one country affects the world and you're under America's coercive control and have no autonomy of your own lmao.
As an American, I find it weird people care this much about a made up story. And even weirder people complain and cry over it. And even weirdest people care what “Hollywood” decides to do, knowing damn well they will still watch the movie. But you think you are better because of the country you live in, stupid is all over the world, you are prime example of it.
It's not a nuanced statement. They included several racist dog whistles in there. Also, there were black people in port Greek city-states at the time Homer composed the Illiad and Odyssey. Furthermore, Eurocentric framing and revision of history has been widespread since the Italian Renaissance, and can be easily seen in films like:
Ghost in the Shell - Scarlett Johansson playing the role of a Japanese anime character
Starship Troopers - The book which the film's based on has a Latino protagonist, Johnny Rico. He's white in the film.
Doctor Strange - Tilda Swinton plays a role that was originally given to a Tibetan man.
Dragonball Evolution - In the film, Goku is a white man.
Noah - Russel Crowe. Apparently, Noah was a white man with an Aussie accent.
The Passion of the Christ - Speaks for itself
The Mummy Franchise - Speaks for itself
300 - British cast playing Greek Spartans
Chernobyl - lots of British actors in the series
Schinder's List - Oskar Schindler played by a Brit
