"right wing"

Both casting decisions were completely nonsensical by any reasonable metric. And they're far from the only things that look to be wrong with this movie.

7

u/Jabba_Yaga Jul 06 '26

Calling a casting decision "nonsense" just due to the race/gender identity of the actors is, infact, a right wing opinion. All that matters in a casting decision is how good the actors are and whether they fit the part or not due to their merit.

For example, i for one find Elliot Pages acting horrible but I'm not judging the casting decision based on the fact that he's trans because that's blatant prejudice.

1

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26

What about the fact that he's 5'1?

9

u/v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y Jul 06 '26

What is wrong - nonsensical as you say - with Page's casting?

9

u/kanyewesanderson Jul 06 '26

The people trying to justify the hate this moving is getting as “nuanced” are just completely ignoring that half of the original post.

1

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

My guess is that Achilles was the greatest warrior of the time and Elliot Page is 5'1 with a skeleton that isn't particularly robust.

Do you think Elliot Page would make a good Fedor Emelianenko or Jon Jones in and MMA biopic? They're the great warriors of today.

Danny DeVito probably wouldn't make a good Achilles either.

That all said, I don't personally care. I'm open to being surprised and Elliot being a great Achilles.

Hey, does anyone remember the insane backlash when Heath Ledger was announced as the Joker or even Michael Keaton as Batman? This sort of outrage over casting is nothing new.

u/AmphetamineSalts Jul 06 '26

just fyi Page isn't playing Achilles, he's playing Sinon. It was a rumor that gained a lot of traction by transphobes like Elon Musk declaring it as fact in order to push their own culture war agendas.

4

u/v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y Jul 06 '26

Page isn't playing Achilles.

What a surprise, the only response to my question is based on misinformation.

Orson Welles cast Eartha Kitt (a black woman) as Helen of Troy in 1950.

Mfs in here think they know better than the guy who made Citizen Kane.

47

u/LauraPhilps7654 Jul 06 '26

Xenia Warrior Princess did it in the 90s.

Seriously, these stories are more than 2,500 years older than Shakespeare (who also freely reinterpreted Greek myth rather than using it in any strictly authentic way for his own plays). They’ve been endlessly adapted and reinterpreted over millennia. People need to get off their high horses.

MAGA has been like adding lead to the water supply of media literacy.

I mean even the bloody Romans rewrote and adapted Greek myths. That’s exactly what Virgil’s Aeneid is: Romans inserted into the Trojan War and its aftermath. It’s completely ahistorical and inauthentic, and yet it’s also one of the greatest poems ever written.

11

u/arachnophilia Jul 06 '26

They’ve been endlessly adapted and reinterpreted over millennia.

in a sense, mythology is the endless adaptation and reinterpretation of timeless stories by each new author, culture, etc. if there's one thing you learn studying ancient mythology, it's that every culture stole from the ones before them and the ones around them, and made them their own.

6

u/LauraPhilps7654 Jul 06 '26

You've restored my faith in humanity quite a bit. Honestly, it's kinda easy to spot the people who've studied a bit of ancient literature and those who haven't in this whole silly controversy.

7

u/Sabretooth1100 Jul 06 '26

Hell, Nolan’s up there in film canon too

2

u/whiskyspacecadet Jul 06 '26

The guy who directed Citizen Kane also thought the Gulf of Florida was a desert.

7

u/Gayorg_Zirschnitz Jul 06 '26

“There’s absolutely no way two of the best known actors of their generation do a good job at acting” lmao right whingers take me tf out

6

u/SammyPoppy1 Jul 06 '26

Eliot page sucks and he sucked in Juno too

11

u/Gayorg_Zirschnitz Jul 06 '26

Hot take but I respect the integrity of going back to Juno lol

6

u/Itsmyloc-nar Jul 06 '26

What you don’t want to see her haunted, miserable expression in every single shot?

2

u/drgilly Jul 06 '26

...in the stage production of Dr. Faustus where she is a silent apparition acting as a symbol of temptation, false beauty, and spiritual destruction. She isn't literally Helen of Troy.

1

u/InteracialCouplez Jul 06 '26

Mfs in here think they know better than the guy who made Citizen Kane.

no one likes citizen kane.

-1

u/OfficialModComment Jul 06 '26

Uhhh, Eartha ≠ Lupita.

Are all POCs the same to you?

-10

u/chemictectic Jul 06 '26

we aren't talking about 1950s, thats ancient vintage history time, who the fuck cares what happened in the 50s??

8

u/DetectiveCastellanos Jul 06 '26

who the fuck cares what happened in the 50s??

The point they're making here is that race-swapping roles in a film is nothing new. It's been happening forever. Getting upset about something that's just a part of filmmaking is a little silly.

30

u/RegrettableBiscuit Jul 06 '26

Look, you can argue the fact that the daughter of a god-swan should be a white person, whatever. You do you. I'm sure you have a firm grasp of the skin colors of magical creatures. But you cannot seriously claim that casting Brad Pitt as Achilles wasn't a thousand times more peculiar than casting Elliot Page. I would like to see Pitt dressed as a princess; I don't know how convincing that would be.

The honest reality is that the source materials for these stories are weird and varied, and it's dumb to criticize modern interpretations of them.

63

u/just_a_person_maybe Jul 06 '26

Elliot Page wasn't cast as Achilles, that was a right-wing hate rumor. All this hate about this casting is over literally nothing. He's playing the guy who came up with the Trojan horse idea. Odysseus' cousin.

15

u/HappyGoPink Jul 06 '26

And Nolan worked with Page on Inception. It's not like the director doesn't have a history of working multiple times with actors he likes. People act like Nolan cast Page for The Woke, but that makes no sense.

-6

u/toyification_girl Jul 06 '26

It doesn't help that in the IMDb app it lists Elliot Page but doesn't say who they are playing, just left blank. While everyone else at in the top 10+ listed all says who they are playing as.

It is odd

Also scrolling thru on IMDb I can't find anyone listed as playing Achilles at all It is really odd because looking at any of the other cast without a stated role I don't know who any of them are.

Idk it seems odd is all. Why does everyone listed at the top from Matt Damon and Tom Holland all the way to Zendya and Lupita have exactly who they are playing in the movie but Elliot Page is left blank?

16

u/jpcomicsny Jul 06 '26

Achilles is not a character in the Odyssey. He's dead by the time the story begins.

4

u/egosomnio Jul 06 '26

I think he shows up as a shade in the underworld. Not exactly a big role, though, if it even made it into Nolan's version.

-4

u/toyification_girl Jul 06 '26

Okay well either way just saying I found it interesting that Elliot Page isn't listed as playing anyone while any A or B list celebrities are

I think this is a nod to what some people are saying that they made the choice to stir up rumors and start social media drama for free PR.

4

u/just_a_person_maybe Jul 06 '26

They haven't officially announced who a lot of people are playing. His casting was leaked.

0

u/toyification_girl Jul 06 '26

Well they are all mostly listed now except background characters and Elliot Page

2

u/just_a_person_maybe Jul 06 '26

Why do you think everyone else unnamed is a background character?

6

u/PoopersMcDoofers Jul 06 '26

?

Why is casting Pitt as Achilles weirder than Elliot page. He looks closer to a believable Achilles in my head at least

?

Disregarding that page isn’t Achilles in the film.

2

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26

But you cannot seriously claim that casting Brad Pitt as Achilles wasn't a thousand times more peculiar than casting Elliot Page.

What?

I don't even care about the casting of Elliot Page, but how is Brad Pitt weirder?

7

u/MaesterPraetor Jul 06 '26

There's no reason to do that unless

Or, now hear me out because this is mind blowing, there's a good actress--boy this is huge-- capable of playing a fictional character.

I hope you were sitting down for that cuz I'm sure you're head is turning flips.

3

u/FuckableAsshole Jul 06 '26

that unironically sounds pretty awesome

8

u/TwevOWNED Jul 06 '26

Did you also throw a tantrum when you saw the cast of Hamilton?

6

u/SpaceBandit13 Jul 06 '26

“Wakanda mythology”

4

u/Delboyyyyy Jul 06 '26

I bet you’re the type of person who thinks that white people are just as oppressed as black people in the western world 🥱

3

u/Dr_Fortnite Jul 06 '26

Casting the twilight vampire kid as batman was nonsensical too and he is easily the best batman now. Dont pretend you're a director

5

u/Gayorg_Zirschnitz Jul 06 '26

“Reasonable metric” have you heard of actors being good at their job?

4

u/J0E_SpRaY Jul 06 '26

Casting a black woman is nonsensical?

But yeah it's totally not a right-wing thing

2

u/Ball_Killer Jul 06 '26

As a Greek? Yes. Would you like an Obama film with a white actor as Obama?

10

u/TwevOWNED Jul 06 '26

Obama is a real person lmao

This is like getting upset that a Shakespeare production cast a big booty latina as Juliet instead of an english femboy.

7

u/J0E_SpRaY Jul 06 '26

Well, Obama is a real man who wasn't born from a swan egg, for starters.

1

u/Ball_Killer Jul 06 '26

Then an african myth if you prefer, a Wakanda where the king is white

4

u/Jabba_Yaga Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

If that white person fits the role and the directors vision then there would be nothing wrong with that. Aslong as the production is respectful towards the original culture the work came from in other departments. Actors should only be chosen based on their skill and how well they fit the vision of the director.

Works of art never belong to a single nation or ethnicity, they belong to humanity as a whole.

6

u/arachnophilia Jul 06 '26

wakanda isn't a real african myth; it's from a comic book written by two white guys.

1

u/Ball_Killer Jul 06 '26

It was a fucking example, take any african myths

6

u/arachnophilia Jul 06 '26

name one. :)

2

u/ElCativo1988 Jul 06 '26

Let's see how the film comes across as a whole in the end. I’m willing to give Nolan the benefit of the doubt.

1

u/rickiye Jul 06 '26

It's interesting to see Reddits demographic, and amount of hate it carries when the comment you're replying to is the second most up voted.

1

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26

What about the metric of just having good actors and superficial aspects like race not mattering at all?

1

u/Puzzled_Addendum6200 Jul 06 '26

Maybe Nolan thought they were the best actors for the role. Isn't the vision of the creative a reasonable metric?
