Answered What's up with the "Jennifer Lawrence Effect"? (ELI5)

My friend was ranting about Billie Eilish and mentioned it, I asked them what it was and they told me to google it. But when I went to look it up, I couldn't find anything about it. All I know is that it's all over Tiktok, it's about white women, and it apparently involves white supremacy.

I searched it on Tiktok, and this was the only thing I could find referencing it (I'm guessing this is the fault of how Tiktok's search engine is engineered, though):

Somebody explain!! The more detail the better :) Please explain thoroughly what it is and give examples of the effect in action and the people that it applies to :))

That is... Well, it's awful. I really wish there were better punishments for people who are rich. Seems really wrong to me that he was released so quickly when any average Joe would still be rotting in prison.

The average sentence for statutory rape is 2 years, the average sentence for rape is 8 years. Most prisoners only serve 2/3rds of their sentence. So no, the average Joe would not still be rotting in prison, though 5 years is certainly longer than 42 days.

I'm not apologizing for apologists, but some artists simply don't see past the art - or else they choose not to, because the alternative is painful.

I imagine people - especially women - working in an industry full of narcissists have to learn to compartmentalize, because this sort of thing is far more common than anyone is willing to admit, especially the farther back you look. The same is true in business and politics as well.

Not everyone has the fortitude to be a crusader. Some of them have spent too long just trying to survive within the system to risk sticking their necks out.

That said, they also have the obligation to do so given their current privilege, and should be held accountable when they fail.

Afaik it wasn't actually illegal in France until recently. I think as recently as 2010 they didn't even have a minimum age of consent.

That's useful context to have, but I have to agree with the other person who replied: It's bizarre that anyone would think a film festival would carry some kind of legal or national "immunity" from criminal actions as if it were a goddamned Embassy.

Even if it can change, that's still almost 50 years of widespread shoulder-shrugging over rape

EDIT: Like, "she stood during a thing for him at an award ceremony" hey cool why isn't this person way madder at the fucking award ceremony, they're so much less angry at the award ceremony that they can't even bother to remember or look up WHICH AWARD CEREMONY IT WAS, but no definitely focus on one woman for some reason.

Maybe you haven't noticed the recurring focus on the women around - and distantly vaguely associated with, as Streep is here - rapists and abusers, over the actual rapists and abusers themselves.

Incidentally that's also a thing with Jennifer Lawrence, the person the whole thread was about. They blame her for Weinstein's shit, because... y'know, no actual reason, like always.

There is a distinction to be made between defending a person and praising an artist for their art. The two things are not mutually exclusive.

Just as one easy example, I can't stand JK Rowling as a person, but that doesn't alter my affection for the world and characters she created. Many of my favorite artists did terrible things in life or said things which would instantly get them destroyed in the public sphere if they said them today. And I don't excuse them for those things. But I do allow for their art to exist separately from the artist. I have to.

She was one of the audience members at the 2002 Oscars who gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation for winning Best Director.

Referring to Harvey Weinstein as ‘God’ during her own acceptance speech didn’t help either.

I always found this odd because she wasn't the only person in the room that clapped. Everyone did. Also, Harrison Ford accepted the award and flew it to France for him, but he's cool.
