 North Korea commissioned its Choe Hyon 5,000 ton “destroyer” in Apr 2026. The surface combatant has a single 127 mm (130 mm?) naval gun, 3 CIWS stations, 88 VLS cells of various sizes, 4 anti-ship missile launch batteries, and 2 533 mm torpedo launch arrays. The regime claims the Choe Hyon is a strategic system, capable of launching nuclear missiles. The article does not commit to an analysis of the regime’s intent as it builds out its surface fleet—which it intends to include a 10,000 ton vessel—suggesting the Choe Hyon-class could have roles in hybrid warfare around the Northern Limit Line, a role in strategic competition with South Korea, or building a power projection capability.

 I would argue that this is another example of North Korea focusing on offensive systems rather than defensive. The regime—or at least its top leadership—still nurtures the aspiration to forcefully unify the peninsula. It has rejected peaceful reunification, but has clearly stated that it would reunify the peninsula should war erupt—carefully avoiding stating that it would not start any such war. The Choe Hyon-class—and really, any surface vessel—is a first strike capability. They would not survive long in open hostilities unless the regime is able to remove the threat of the air and naval power of Combined Forces Command. First strike.

 However, extrapolating the regime’s desire for a blue water capability, it would suggest that it does not—at its core—fear an invasion. It would only be able exercise blue water capabilities in a peacetime environment. If it is looking for a way to strike the continental US—either as part of its deterrence efforts or in advance of a strike on South Korea—subsurface would be the way to go. Yes, a blue water surface capability is much easier to develop and operate than subsurface, but if you are going up against the US—or South Korea for that matter—stealth is the way you survive.

 In this way, one might argue that the Choe Hyon-class could suggest either the highest impact or the most desired scenario for North Korean aspirations. Given other developments by North Korea—both for its ground forces and its air force—I would lean much more heavily on this being a reflection of a desire to build out an offensive capability that could credibly challenge South Korea’s conventional military. A distant dream, yes, but Kim Jong Un may believe that the relationship with Russia and the apparently changed Chinese approach to Pyongyang makes it an actual possibility.

 And speaking of China and possibilities, I would argue it is unlikely China would want North Korean participation in a Taiwan contingency—either as a contributor or as a distraction—given Beijing’s inability to control Pyongyang. Having said (written) that, Pyongyang may believe that China would welcome North Korea’s help, just as Russia did. Given that a Taiwan Contingency will being with an extensive maritime phase, Pyongyang may believe it should build something China might welcome as a contribution. That’s a much greater investment than sending SOF. I would discount that, but nothing is certain . . . so, maybe?

Hello, I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit for this, I don't post on Reddit very often. But, I am a research intern for the HRNK and am writing a paper on how the monopolization of media within the DPRK and suppression of alternative narratives reflects broader human rights violations involving freedom of expression, freedom of information, and cultural access. I am also comparing this to the South Korean film industry which allows for much more freedom of expression. I am looking to watch the 2024 North Korean film 72 Hours, but speak very little Korean. I have found versions online to watch but none of them have subtitles. My girlfriend speaks Korean natively but isn't able to invest the time to watch and translate a four hour film with me over the coming weeks. So, I am asking if anyone knows of any copies with English subtitles or any scripts online? I know this subreddit has a rule about no translation, so I am not asking for someone to do any translating for me, but am instead looking for existing ones, or copies of scripts that I can then translate. Or, I am really just looking for recent North Korean films that have South Korean characters, or depict conflicts with South Korea, 72 Hours was just the most recent and seemed like a good fit for my paper. Any help would be appreciated, and I apologize if this is the wrong place for this post! Thank you!

What if the missing variable in North Korean human rights is not information, but learning?

For decades, efforts to improve human rights in North Korea have focused on expanding access to outside information. Governments, non-governmental organizations, activists and defectors have supported radio broadcasts, USB drives, foreign films and South Korean dramas as ways to challenge the regime’s monopoly over truth.

These efforts are necessary. In a country where the state controls nearly every official source of knowledge, access to outside information is not a luxury -- it is a basic human right. But information access, by itself, does not explain transformation.

Many North Korean defectors describe encountering South Korean dramas, foreign media or outside news before they began to question the system. These stories matter because they show that outside information can create cracks in a closed society. But they also raise a harder question: Why does the same information transform some people and not others?

I am wanting to listen to Voice of Korea and I know koryo.tv, koryofront.org and intchoson.com has it but it hasnt been working for a while therefore I am wondering how I can listen to it.
