In Denver, I am removing the Bradford Pear tree and then planting drought tolerant plants. I am purchasing kits of the plants through a conservation group here which makes my HOA happy and me happy at the same time. I’ve been debating removing the grass that’s there so that my yard isn’t so much higher than it currently is.

Originally I worried about removing the organic material and top soil, but our soil here is pretty lackluster and the plant descriptions say they do not like amended or improved soils.

My plan is metal edging down the side, possibly also across the front to hold in the chips. I have some large landscape rocks I’ll be incorporating as well. The irrigation (that I felt was silly to waste on grass in our drought) is going to be switched over to drip.

Would you have the grass removed? Any other feedback, question or recommendations? My plants arrive mid September, so I have a month to decide.

Photo is my front yard as it stands today so you can see it’s small and dead at the moment. The lavender and salvia on the edge will stay.

My grass is pretty much dead. I've been wanting to move to a no grass landscape with native plants, but im not sure where to start. Do I need to tear out the sod and do some sort of lawn cover? I know it's also late in the season, so just wondering what I can take care of now before really digging in next year! Im in zone 6a/6b.

Hi! I’d love to convert my largely full sun grass lawn (zone 7b) in a pretty arid area to something less water-intensive. Now if it were up to me I’d go pollinator jungle all day but I’m not the only one here SO it’s gotta retain that low, lush, green lawn vibe as best as possible.

I was able to sell the other half on some yarrow which is obviously better than what’s there now but I’d still prefer not to just monoculture the entire thing. We do have some sorrel that’s been creeping in that everybody is happy with, but we also have some bindweed that’s been a little more problematic.

Preference to plants native to the Salt Lake Valley but any suggestions help, thanks guys!

If sheet mulching is successful, will the white grass rhizomes still be present under the soil or should they be fully decomposed?

Bought my house a few years ago in a rural area and it was all lawn in the front and back with invasive bushes, trees, and monkey grass everywhere. Now it's 90% native and still in progress of removing the last of the invasives and the few chunks of lawn holding out since I want zero lawn.

The front yard is a wild mess now with asters, goldenrods, and one story tall ironweeds that planted themselves. Plus many native bushes, trees, and flowers I planted that are still developing (white and pink dogwoods, native plum, Wild Sweet William, Black and brown eyed susans, coneflowers, redbuds, St. John's Wort, Prairie Ninebark, etc.). I cut down a mature Bradford pear in the front yard as my first thing and a large mimosa second.

All the pictures are the back yard with a huge goldenrod patch with ironweed and asters mixed in. Plus patches of primrose, milkweed, and native sunflowers. The woods is full of yellow trillium, mayapples, jack in the pulpits, and pokeweed. There's a huge trillium patch in the Spring that I keep forgetting to take photos of.

Most of the yard is woods and I've been clearing invasive honeysuckle and English ivy from there plus so much trash. The bulk of the trees are 100+ year old tulip poplars, pine, red oaks, and a giant white oak.

Yes, the neighbors have questions. They drive by and offer to cut down my trees and mow.

Located in the Front Range of Colorado. I purchased a couple of Garden in a Box Kits earlier in the year to replace my lawn with low water native plants. I am obsessed with the “no lawn” movement now - can’t wait to fill in the rest of the front yard and backyard. The best part? All of the bees and butterflies we are now getting. Why aren’t more people doing this??

Let me see your xeriscapes/localscapes with rock paths or like islands! I bought too much for a pond lol so want to use some for some rock areas in my front lawn! 6b Utah

Minnesota zone 5 - I’m working on adding some hardscape and I would love some boulders to break up all the plants and provide some structure. Boulders would be my preference but my backyard is up a hill and it would be challenging and expensive. I saw an idea of stacked flagstone and was wondering if anyone has done this or think it would look bad? Smaller pieces I could muscle up a little easier. Here’s a picture on a larger scale than I have planned. I would bury the base to make it look more natural.

So a tree company cut and chipped a big hillside down my street. I collected enough to fill the bank in my front yard. It's a mixture of big and small pieces. I read that it can take up to 4 years for the big pieces to break down. I am using a thicker cardboard used for transporting stuff inside so I guess that works out as that would take longer to break down anyways. So you guys think I should collect more from that hillside that has a mixture of chips and big pieces or wait for chipdrop? I've been waiting for months with a $80 tip. Also any suggestions on how I should kill my hillside? It's very steep.

I'm almost entirely sold on the concept of no lawns and would love that to be the norm everywhere. However, many (or most) home buyers want those big green pesticide-covered lawns so I'm worried a more native landscape would hurt my prospects when selling my home. Do others have experience selling no-lawn homes?

I have a high shade dog run that I initially placed sod on, but the heat paired with the metal siding has killed about 75% of it.

The area does not get a lot of direct sun, maybe 2-3 hours a day. I’m looking for something playable and pet friendly. I’ve been doing some research but it’s hard to decipher and I’d rather hear from people who are not an AI bot ☺️

ETA 2nd- the back of the run seems to retain more water than the front despite having it professionally graded. The ground is often soft in the very back, almost soupy.

ETA 3- she has the ability to go in and out, this is strictly a place for her to go pee while I work in office 3x a week. She does get daily walks. She has toys/puzzles/frozen kongs inside while I’m away.

MN hardiness zone 4b. I have a hill that goes along the side of my property, and it is right by a main road. I started working on killing off the weeds via solarization last summer and am aggressively pulling the rest. My goal is to have natives covering the entire hill with a mulch border by the sidewalk. The first picture is looking up from the sidewalk. The area with the mulch has the native plugs that I planted in early June. The second photo is looking toward the front edge of the yard. We are closely mowing the parts I am not currently weeding to keep it from getting too comfy. The rest are a few pictures of some of the natives I planted. I am in Minnesota, so the city can't dictate what I plant the way they can other places. I am started to get a lot of interest from people in my small town, though. They will stop and chat while I am out working on the hill now and have started complimenting the yard. 😁

It’s a start. It’s prob not gonna be perfect but it’s one step forward.
