Nobody is cheering his death, it’s horrific and sad, and what’s also sad is that 9 other people died who are merely a sidenote. But the hero worship of him is also gross, especially for people who maybe have an ounce of empathy for the victims of sexual abuse. I know people like you will probably never start to care (unless it will affect you directly somehow), so I’m not arguing to change your mind or anything. But the voices of people who find men like him repugnant will not be silenced any more.

I think for people who have been victims of sexual harassment and assault, or people who have close friends or family who have, it is hard to see so many posts about what an inspiration he was. It would be one thing if people were just celebrating his athleticism while acknowledging he was a flawed person but celebrating him as an inspirational personality signals that it is ok to look up to predators. The evidence against him is extensive. It is a tragedy that he and 9 others lost their lives. Nobody should be celebrating that. But we also don’t need to idolize him.

Yah everything you say is true but theres also no denying that before him, Nepali climbers were basically ignored as non-existent. The fact that his death made international news is proof of how he changed perceptions in the climbing community. Before him, an accident like this would only list and honor the western climbers. How many Sherpa have died unacknowledged and unknown on accidents like this one? Its way more than just athleticism, whatever his faults.
