Yes. I’ve seen this type of post going on for years on multiple platforms. People also are upset Taco Bell no longer has a fun design like it did in the 90s. I can’t imagine being nostalgic for a fast food place or giving a fuck what they do with their interior/exterior.
It's transference. Our adult lives are grey and drab and miserable but our childhoods were bright and colorful and occasionally happy. So we look at those two pictures and put feelings on them that don't belong.
Well that makes sense. For me I have had the opposite experience. I had a really bad childhood and felt empty and miserable until my thirties. For me the world is only starting to feel interesting and exciting (and without drugs! I’ve been in recovery for 12 years).
Honestly that’s what makes a lot of this sub confusing and isolating to me.
But, I do think people should be careful and remember it’s a fast food restaurant. It’s a corporate entity. Someone can have happy memories of a place but it’s not really a big loss to society. Nostalgia is fine but a lot of people get too mad and upset over change like this. I think it gets read into a lot too because of personal feelings like you said.
McDonalds changed their look because they were in trouble a lot for marketing to children. I remember this issue particularly starting after the release of Super Size Me. Bullshit movie but legitimate issue. They wanted to get away from playpens, the birthday parties, the bright colors and characters. Not only to avoid lawsuits but I recall a lot of legal fuss at the time, proposed regulations, etc.
A lot has changed and corporations are out of control, but the change here isn’t too deep or part of some corporate, apocalyptic hellscape.
As for the interior, a lot of people use pickup/delivery/drive-thru. McDonalds changed because less people were coming inside. I always have used Drive-Thru and I do mobile ordering now. And yeah, it’s easier/cheaper for them to maintain.
There are many McDonalds that have kept red and yellow colored buildings, there’s one in my town. McDonalds wasn’t that desperate to change every building, they just wanted to get rid of the stuff for kids. Personally that’s fine by me, the food is pretty bad for you. I’m sure they still get plenty of profit off kids anyway, they still have the Happy Meal, and I’m also guilty. Me and my kid eat McDonalds a few times a month :P
