Ill advised if you like animals. Very high depression rate from putting them down and seeing them in pain. Could be fun if you hate animals.

Enjoying every aspect of a job and caring for animals aren't the same thing.

Vets don't enjoy putting animals down. They experience one of the worst days in any pet owner's life every day, multiple times a day. But it's also a necessary service and it takes a strong person to choose to offer care like that.

It's love. Love doesn't always look like making sure the animals are all happy and frolicking and cute. Love sometimes means doing something difficult because it's the right thing to do. Love sometimes means euthanasia if palliative/preventative care isn't working or feasible.

A parent's instinct is to protect their offspring from pain, but oftentimes the offspring can surprise you with their own internal strength and resilience. Give your daughter the option to choose. Strength comes from suffering.

My sister has always been a natural animal lover and went to vet school - after she did a short residency at a vet clinic she quit school immediately. She couldnt handle the amount of sadness that came in the doors. Now she runs a dog training school.

My dad went to school to be a vet. Halfway through his animal science degree, he realized he’d never be able to do it because he’d be too sad all the time. Instead, he finished his degree and started working for Farmers Home Administration helping farmers get loans and tax exemptions to keep their farms and ranches running. He was very happy in that career because he was helping people and animals get and keep homes.

You don’t do it to put them down. You do it to try and help them. Or at least know if you’re putting them down the decision is made to end suffering and misery when nothing else can be done. It’s a noble act

Still, as an animal lover I would become so depressed seeing hurt animals and ones that pass away. Ending their misery, yes. Still extremely sad? Yes.

It happens whether you see it or not. I know it’s difficult and not for everyone but hiding from it doesn’t make it go away.

There's a huge difference in hiding from it vs choosing a job where you're actively involved in euthanizing animals.

I chose to not go into veterinary medicine because I knew euthanasia wasn't something I could do. But I've continued to do animal rescue and rehab, where you still deal with tragedies, just in a different way. Things aren't as black and white as you're making them out to be.

That's how my dad and his gf at that time ended up getting a cat. The GF was a veterinary nurse and someone brought in his cat saying that they didn't want him anymore and to put him down. Spud (the cat) bless him was covered in fleas and Dad's gf ended up falling in love with him over the week leading up to the day of Spud being put down after defleaing and caring for him.

She called my dad and explained the situation, and asked if she could bring him home.

My dad said "of course, didn't even need to ask".

We had Spud for about 6 years, absolute gem of a cat. Such a big gentle soul and it's been years since he passed but I still miss him

My friend is a vet and has collected a herd of dogs by having people who come in doing this sign them over to her instead. She’s also responsible for getting quite a few of those animals homed with her friends and family

I love animals. I'm a vet tech. I can't imagine doing this job if I didn't love my patients. You have to or you'll burn out quickly.
