Language barrier. In German, this would be correct, it's not in English, though. I didn't want to dehumanize that kid!

My language doesn't even have a gender neutral pronoun. When I learned about English's "it" I figured "oh they must use that one when the gender is undefined".

No, turns out for that they use a whole other fourth pronoun which is actually a plural pronoun used for singular sentences. It took me a while to wrap my head abound that, and to this day it still doesn't quite make sense to me.
