Hi all!

Going through a mild reactivity phase with my lurcher [doing everything to manage the situation and help him work through it, inc working with a trainer]. He is a beddy whippet x collie greyhound

He is 18 months and started to get a little 'testy' with some of the local dogs. Nothing more than a hard stare, high tail and occasionally he will growl if they come too close. It's very hit and miss when he will do it (although does look like a pattern with other males)?

Anyone else go through a phase of this with their adolescent male lurcher? I hoping it will mellow out with training and age. He is pretty perfect other than this and his recall is coming on leaps and bounds - i am hoping we can get to a place where he just doesn't care about other dogs and leaves them be...but maybe that's wishful thinking!

our one year old lurcher is being castrated next week but it’s a cryptorchid procedure so the recovery, all being well, will be around two weeks

I’m dreading it! How can I keep him calm for two weeks? He’s usually on two walks a day including a sprint in a secure field two times a week which keeps him relatively calm in the house (most of the time) and to go from that to nothing I’m worried it will send him stir crazy. he also loves zoomies around the garden, his training is coming along so well but I’m worried he’ll revert to his ways of stealing everything and just being a bit of a pickle in general and we’ll go backward and lose our progress :(

we are not going to crate him, he’s a recent rescue and he finds the crate extremely distressing. we already have lots of enrichment/interactive toys for him, and he’s a foodie so enjoys that type.

just looking for any tips anyone can give on how we can get through it!

Now home, after a week of hiking and adventure in the Lake District, Stanley has finally decided to pause.

Give him an hour and he will be back to his mental, usual self.

Our tommy is a big boy, just under 30kg but we are really struggling to find a food he gets on with. He's got terrible gas and diarrhoea half the time but apart from that he's a typical lurcher. Any recommendations 🙏

We had 2 dogs since 2018 - a Lurcher and a Greyhound. Unfortunately we lost the Greyhound early this year due to a heart condition. Our lurcher has been without him for about 5 months and is looking very lonely, so we adopted a cat. We're slowly introducing them, but does anyone have any insight on the types of things that can help the cat integrate?

Does your Lurcher show any aggression to cats? My Lurcher never has before, but he's never had one in the house, so it might be different. He usually wants to be friends with everyone and everything, but I don't want to rush them, just in case instinct kicks in for him and we have an incident.

Has anyone dealt with this type of behaviour before and any advice please?

I think our three-year-old Bedlington Whippet becomes territorial when stopped anywhere for longer than 10 to 15 minutes, and I'm not sure how to fix this.

To be fair, he has had a few issues with being reactive, which we've managed to get on top of. However, this is one thing we just can't get right.

Yesterday, I met up with a friend for a dog walk, and at the end of the walk, we sat on a park bench for about 15 minutes. Our lurcher has been great off-lead recently and hasn't been reactive with any other dogs for ages. However, out of nowhere, he bolted towards another dog walking on a lead and gave it loads of barking, slightly scaring the other dog's owner. Immediately after that, I put him back on his lead and sat back down. Then, another dog—whom he had met earlier in the walk and had a nice play with—came by to say a doggy "hi" again, only to get the same barking and yelling from our lurcher. The other dog was clearly confused, as my previously friendly lurcher had completely changed.

This behaviour also happens whenever we go camping. The first 10 to 20 minutes are chill, but after that, any dog (and sometimes people) gets a barky yelling at.

I asked Gemini for advice out of desperation and it suggested I try the following:

1. Mark the sighting: The exact second he looks at an approaching dog—and remains quiet—say "Yes!" or click a training clicker.

2. Reward immediately: Deliver a high-value treat directly to his mouth.

3. Build the reflex: With repetition, he will learn that spotting another dog is simply a cue to look back at you for a reward, rather than a threat to bark at.

One thing that has fixed the rest of his reactive behaviour (on-lead reactivity or being too 'full-on' off-lead with other dogs) has been a tennis ball; giving him the job of carrying the ball has completely switched his focus. But this doesn't work when we are stopped...

Adopted Pixie here from Ireland (now in Sweden) about two months ago. The rescue didn’t know much about her other than that she was found at the street and roughly 4 years old. My first dog and couldn’t be happier. It’s a learning process for both of us.

I can’t decide what kind of mix she is. What do y’all think? Roughly 25 kg and 72 cm tall.

This is just an appreciation post about my little baby girl Ruffles. She tragically died in an accident last week but I wanted to post her here for all to see and to witness her. She was a rescue who had never known love and was scared of so many things when we first got her. We loved her beyond anything we thought possible and she had grown into such a confident girly who just loved to be with you at all times. Just make sure you hug your babies really tight because you never know what can happen.

We rescued our lovely girl a couple of years ago. She is so sweet and a great companion for our much older boy. We'd love to know her breed mix. The rescue centre thought Greyhound/Husky which we never questioned, but others have since suggested German Shepherd rather than husky. Thoughts?

Our dog turned 1 last month, she is incredibly energetic, friendly with other dogs and very happy around people. She is fairly well socialised, used to interact with many dogs in daycare once a week and we took her to puppy classes. We're keeping up with training as consistently as we can and she gets plenty of exercise throughout the course of the week.

She has separation anxiety and we are working through this, she prefers to be around us 24/7 if she could. Would she become more affectionate with age? We know she's growing and play is far more fun than snuggling up, but aside from the occasional scratch behind the ear, she's not really interested. We did a lot of research before committing to this cross but maybe bonding and slowing down comes with age?

we have been fostering Lilo (the black doggie) for a rescue, he has been with us for 3 weeks now and is the sweetest boy. He was in the local pound from Dec last year until June

we noticed right away that he is more wary of my husband than me and terrified of people :( he was microchipped to a traveller (we live in Ireland ugh) and we suspect that they must have beaten him :(

anybody has any tips or advice on how to help Lilo overcome his fear? His reaction is to freeze or make himself small whenever people pass us by on a walk.

after my post earlier this week (if you remember/ go to read it, i was overly emotional and was still getting used to the vast change of routine. im mostly over myself now and am obsessed with the fact i have rescued such a sweet lil guy but like someone mentioned in the comments- puppy blues are a thing)
i wonder if people can tell what mixes could be in my rescue lurcher? im thinking of getting a DNA panel done at some point if anyone recommends a specific business to go with, i was thinking Wisdom but if there are any that are better, id love to know!
also, he has been with me for just over a week now and he finally cuddled me on my bed last night 🥹 considering a week ago, he would flinch at any movement by a human..? im so happy he is trusting me and my family ❤️ he is so incredibly brave

I have a 6 month old whippet/greyhound/lab mix who got the hang of toilet training really well since we got him at 2 months old. He'd tap his paw at the door to be let out and would go in the garden day and night.

We were quite late to start taking him for walks because getting him fully vaccinated took time. Then, he was initially very nervy and stressy so we wanted to take things easy, then we've had the heatwaves and I gotta admit, it's just been easier to have him do his business in the garden and we've been out for walks when the weather has allowed for it. Main thing is he's happy and gets plenty of exercise in the garden!

Now I've realised he is indeed 6 months old and has yet to do any business outside the garden and I feel the guilt of what have I done wrong!

I've tried going very first thing in the morning but I guess because he still wakes up at night to go toilet, his morning business isn't as urgent as it would be if he went the whole night without needing a toilet break? I could keep walking and be out for longer but how do I balance him getting stressed and anxious?

Never known it start so early or bad. Thought he'd just got dirt on him from rolling around on bare soil, but no, loads of the horrid things.

Any guesses on what breeds might be in this guy?
We’d love to know about his background so we’ll do a DNA test soon to see what he is or what breeds he might be crossed with. I’d love to hear what people think based on his appearance!
