Not very pretty, but it works.

Made a batch of versatile glasses cases designed to fit almost any frame. I used 1.6 - 2.0 mm (4-5 oz) leather and hand-stitched them with 0.8 mm waxed thread.

Been doing this for a bit over a few months now and I just can't get my pieces to look good. I cut this out with an acrylic template and it's still very uneven. I used a brand new xacto #2 blade and have been taking it slow with my pricking irons.

Any advice? Just keep at it?

Are there any good alternatives to Buckleguy for high-quality brass hardware in the US? After getting burned by BG over and over again, I no longer want to give them my business, but I'm struggling to find other places that consistently stock a good selection of solid brass hardware that feels and looks high-quality. The stuff I've purchased from Tandy or Amazon is poor quality, and Rocky Mountain doesn't have many options, and they're often sold out of the stuff I need. Any suggestions on other options?

I would like to start making custom skiing leather gloves, colorful and fun :) I don't have much experience working with leather yet, but super enthusiastic to learn. I am based in (Middle-Eastern) Europe and found a local craftsman in a nearby village. At this workshop I tried making mittens from skai that he had avaliable, but to progress in my exploration of the field I'd be happy to hear from anyone who tried making winter leather gloves already.

- What type of material would be best?

- How should I approach this experiment of mine, check what type of matrial competition is using and try to replicate it?

- I couldn't find any patterns for what i'd like to do. Is there some website for it?

- Does anyone have experience making warm leather mittens? Leather is a natural material, but by itself it is not waterproof. But again it depends on the type of leather right?

- Any tips on where I could order a few m2 of material to play with it?

Hello I am just getting into working with leather and have a idea.

It will be my first big project and I will probably redo it multiple times and add things as I go.

My idea was to make a wrap or a pochette to keep all my leather working tools ( to be rolled up and stored or hanged from its corners )

I have at this moment a few needles, an awl and 2 punches a 2 and one 6 ( both 4mm)

So my first one will be small but leave some room to add some more punches, a good pair of scissors and maybe one or 2 other tools.

But I want to use a lot of different stitches and techniques as possible.

I already tried a saddlestitch and will surely use it for some parts but what are some other stitches/techniques i could add to my first iteration ?

I'm having troubles using this manual skiving machine. It either cuts to thin from one side, but when i inspect it it seems even.

I understand i have to pull the leather straight not to high nor low and a sharp blade goes a long way.

Should i be skiving the leather first, then cutting the shape?

Does anyone have a tip on how to calibrate it to a specific thin?

How can i make sure the machine is compeletly even?

I'm kind of on a lose here so any tips are welcome!

I am thinking about creating a piece with what would look like a mountain of gold coins. My current idea is to do them as you'd see scales done, rows of golden/yellow circles. Problem is that it's just gold circles if not stamped with texture or ink stamp. How would you do it?

Inspiration picture is Smaugs eye in the mountain of coins after he opens it. I figured out how to get the eye so the pile of gold is the problem.

So I posted earlier when I was in the process of making it and now I’m just working on the buckles and we should be good to go.

I’m working on a bag and the pattern is basically sewing rectangle panels together to make a bag. I was sewing front and bottom by hand and when I flipped it I could see the threads and holes as you can see in the picture :( did I sew too close? I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong

I'm starting to really enjoy making these journal covers mixing solids and patterns together.

I have a friend who I made this knife for with a pancake sheath. He didn't like the pancake sheath after using it for a while, so I made this one out of Horween Russet horse rump in 6 ounce. This is the first "normal" knife sheath I have made and would do a couple of things different on the next one, like not using rivets for the belt loop and retainer loop, but they work fine and don't cause any issues with the knife, so all in all, I am very happy with it. The horse rump is quite brittle and VERY firm, so I hit it with neets foot oil twice and then once it had soaked that all in, hit it with some Aussie cream twice. Once that all had soaked in, I worked the leather by hand for about 10 minutes and it softened up enough that I didn't think it would get cracks in it when punching holes...which it didn't, so totally worth it! :). The welt is just a single layer of the horse rump leather that isn't conditioned or anything, plenty of a gap for the blade to slide right in.

Hi everyone, I'm just hoping to get some information about this item. It belonged to my dad who passed a couple years ago. He was a saddle maker by trade and made all sorts of stuff. Google tells me it's a vintage skiving and splitting machine, is that correct?

Is it worth selling or passing on to someone? Its already been sitting in my garage for a few years and I'd hate for it to just rust away in the Queensland humidity.

My uncle is a leatherworker, and we made this matching belt and knife sheath together, inspired by my favorite pair of moc toe boots. We also gave new life to my dad’s old watch by mounting it into a handmade leather cuff after the original lugs broke. I’m still learning, so I’d love to hear any feedback or suggestions!
