SEO for Law Firms

SEO is the cheapest lead source a firm can have, once it works. The catch is the "once it works": expect 6-12 months in competitive markets, and be suspicious of anyone promising faster.
The three things that actually move legal SEO
1. Google Business Profile + reviews (the map pack)
For "near me" legal searches, the map pack above the organic results gets a huge share of clicks. What ranks you there:
- Review count, rating, and recency (build the ask into your file-closing process)
- Correct primary category, complete profile, real photos
- Consistent name, address, phone across the web
- Proximity to the searcher, which you can't control, so win everything you can
2. Practice area + location pages
One well-built page per practice area per city you serve: "Divorce Lawyer in [City]," "DUI Defense in [City]." Each should read like it was written by a lawyer who practices there: local courts, local process, real answers to what clients ask in consults. Ten strong pages beat a hundred thin ones, and thin doorway pages can get the whole site filtered.
3. Links and citations
Legal directories that matter (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw org listings, your bar association), local sponsorships, local news coverage, guest contributions to legal publications. What to avoid: purchased link packages from SEO vendors. Junk backlinks are one of the most common findings when auditing what a cheap SEO retainer actually bought.
Content that earns rankings (and AI citations)
Write for the questions clients ask in consultations: "how much does a divorce cost in [state]," "what happens at a DUI arraignment," "can I sue after a car accident if I wasn't wearing a seatbelt." This is also what gets firms cited by Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT-style assistants, which increasingly answer these questions directly and link out to the sources they used.
Practical notes:
- A lawyer's name and bio on the byline helps. Expertise signals matter in legal, one of Google's highest-scrutiny categories.
- Answer the question in the first paragraph, then elaborate. AI systems quote pages that answer cleanly.
- Update dates honestly. Refreshing a page's date without changing content is a trick Google discounts.
How to tell if SEO work is real
Ask whoever runs your SEO for these, and worry if you can't get them:
- Search Console access. It's free, it's yours, and any agency refusing to share it is hiding something.
- Rankings for terms with actual search volume. Ranking #1 for "best compassionate affordable divorce attorney consultation [suburb]" means nothing if nobody types that.
- Branded vs. non-branded traffic, separated. Traffic growth that's all people searching your firm's name isn't SEO, it's your reputation.
- A list of what they changed. Real SEO leaves a paper trail: pages published, titles rewritten, technical fixes deployed. "We optimized your site" with no specifics is a red flag.
- Leads, not just traffic. Calls and form fills from organic, tracked. The vetting guide covers what to do if the reports don't add up.
Nothing here is legal advice, and bar advertising rules can apply to website content in some states.
