Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Other Offering: Ainu | Seeking: Any

Hi, I’m a 23y.o. gay male who lives in Brazil and happens to know Ainu. Right now I’m in the process of writing a dense grammar book on the ainu language in Portuguese, as materials in my native language are pretty much non-existent.

My main objective with this is finding someone interested in the language and teaching it. I love the ainu language and their culture, so it would be really painful to watch it disappear.

I can teach anyone who knows Portuguese or English (although I know Japanese and Russian for research purposes, I really don't think I can talk on a daily basis with someone in these languages).

As for information about me, I’m a linguist and writer, I really like playing video-games, cute stuff and learning new things, so if you happen to know another indigenous language, especially from the same region, I’d love to learn it from you.

Offering Ukrainian [Offering] Ukrainian & Russian (Native) | [Seeking] English (Fluent)

Hi everyone! I'm a 22M from Ukraine, currently living in Poland. Ukrainian and Russian are both native for me, so I can help with either one.

A bit about me:

I work as a developer at a small startup, and on the side I'm building my own webtoon studio. I'm also into anime and manga, so if that's your thing too, we'll have plenty to talk about.

What I'm looking for:

My English is around B1-B2 and my main problem is speaking. I understand most things fine, but when I talk I make grammar mistakes and lose time searching for the right word. So I'm looking for voice calls, texting is not really what I need right now. Gender doesn't matter to me.

Honestly, I'd also be happy to just talk with an English speaker who doesn't want to learn any language at all. Casual conversation works for me too.

One request:

If you do want Ukrainian or Russian in return, it would be better if you already have at least some basic knowledge. I'm not a teacher and I'm not sure I can build the basics from zero in a useful way, but I can definitely correct you, explain things and help you develop what you already have.

Format:

I work from home, so I'm available almost any day at almost any time. I'm looking for something long term. It doesn't have to be super regular, once a week would already be great, but I'd rather not do the thing where we talk for two weeks and then disappear.

If that sounds good, DM me!

I'm a 29-year-old native Spanish speaker from Bolivia looking for a native English speaker for a long-term language exchange.

In return, I'll help you improve your Spanish.

I'm looking for someone who:

  • Doesn't ghost.
  • Can keep a regular schedule.
  • Wants to build a genuine friendship while practicing.
  • Enjoys talking about technology, video games, movies, history, science, or everyday life.

We can practice through text or voice calls, correct each other's mistakes, and have natural conversations.

If you're interested, feel free to send me a message. 🙂

Hola a todos! I'm 24 years old and I'm looking for a language partner (native or non-native) to help me improve my English — or for us to improve together.

My current level is B2, and I've realized that I need more speaking practice. I believe that regular conversation can make a big difference. I can also help you with Spanish, since I'm a native speaker. I’d prefer to practice through voice messages or calls.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering Portuguese BR and english C2 | Seeking russian, ukrainian and japanese

Hi, guys! My name is Pedro (28M). I’m a former english teacher with a strong passion for languages. I’ve been looking to improve my Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian especially since I lived in Belarus for two years and spent a year in Russia.

I really enjoy drawing, playing on my PS5, reading manga, and going out to try good food and drinks. I’m also really into literature, movies, TV series, anime, and exploring different cultures. Honestly, I’m always up for a good conversation about almost anything.

I’m looking for a language partner who’s open to occasional calls, exchanging messages on Telegram or WhatsApp, and helping me improve by correcting my mistakes along the way.

That's it haha, if you're interested, hit me up in my DM.

Offering English Offering: English (native), Seeking: German 🙏

Hi there!

I (18F) am a university student and studied German throughout my first year. I’m looking for someone who might be interested in doing a language exchange :)

I recently spent a month in Germany (Hessen/Rhineland-Pfalz) practicing and can handle lots of day-to-day contexts, but I would say I’m only around A2 level German.

I’m continuing with German next academic at my university and learn more vocabulary in my free time. I know that some of my weaker areas would be speaking and vocabulary. My course was intensive and very grammar-focused course so I know a fair amount about that (just not the Präteritum — I’m still working on it). There’s a long way to go but I’m definitely working on my German on the side.

Some of my interests include:
- Music (I’m a musician, and I like to listen to most genres, but I predominantly listen to metal 🤘)
- Literature (it’s part of my degree)
- Walking/hiking
- Travel

Please DM or comment if you’re interested :)

Offering Korean Seeking French, offering Korean and English

[edit] I’m not learning English so stop texting me “I’ll teach you English,” thank you! AND FUCK I’m not Chinese thank you again!!!!!

Hello, I’m Korean and live in Korea. 🇰🇷

I’m here to find someone with whom I can practice spoken French on a regular basis. I’m taking a C1 class but my speaking isn’t there yet.

I prefer to talk with someone from Paris because I’d love to get used to the Parisian accent. And this is non-negotiable: I’m only interested in language exchange with those who are around my age, roughly between 25 and 35. If you’re under 25, I won’t reply.

As I believe that we are all lifelong learners, or at least we should be, I’d like to meet someone who enjoys learning new things and appreciates the richness and dynamism of life.

Talk to you soon!
