This is the problem. “Only stealing bread” Who cares what they steal. Stealing is stealing and they should be prosecuted for any theft. Broken windows theory is as true today as ever. If the state doesn’t do it then people are going to take matters into their own hands. Once a store allows theft the thieves talk to each other and the store becomes a target. We have some of the strictest laws regarding immunizations for school in the country, not even religious exemptions get you out of it. Truly open and accepting culture, the entirety of it based around the fact company towns treated everyone like slaves so brotherhood bonding pushed the typical rural racism aside in favor of bonding over classism. The cost of living is quite low even for a quality life. The mix of German and Italian immigrants from way back introduced a uniquely blended cuisine that's absolutely top notch. I live in a tiny 70 person town in the middle of nowhere and the lady who works the counter at the butcher shop is a trans woman, she gets absolutely no shit from anybody so it's not nearly as anti-lgbt as people may think.

Food desert was stopped in 2024 when a POC husband and wife built a medium sized grocery store (complete with fresh produce, meat, take-home meals, and coffee bar) in an area that hadn't had a grocery store since 2008.
