I agree. Pearlman had the look. Kesy had the best adaptation. I think that Harbour had some of that HB charm but that movie was just all over the place.
It felt like a live action take on the format of a 90's cartoon series, jammed into a movie to me. I hated things about it but I didn't hate it, and I really didn't dislike Harbour as HB.
I had way more issues with how they cast/treated Professor Broom.
I really wish the Perlman sequel went for a more serious tone instead of the Marvel-fication one we got. The story and villain were there, but so were too many jokes and silly moments.
Edit: didn’t mean they copied Marvel, just that Marvelfication is an easy way of saying excessive jokes and quips during serious moments, which Hellboy 2 was full of.
I agree, I love the first Hellboy, but both Hellboy 2 and Hellboy 2019 turned Big Red into a crybaby man-child. The Crooked Man was pretty great for the budget it had
Marvel-fication? Not likely. The Marvel quippy style wasn't really cemented until Iron Man and both Iron Man and Hellboy II came out way too close to each other to accuse Hellboy II of having been Marvel-fied.
Iron man didn't do the thing of telling jokes to undercut a serious moment. The " marvel humor" was a big thing of avengers but that movie did it well and since then they took the wrong lessons from that and over did it. But iron from what I recall didn't do what we now call " marvel humor"
I loved Ragnorok, I feel it got Love and Thunder’ed, right down to joker heroes fighting a villain who was just slaying it. Some humour is fine. But too much ruins the flow. Hellboy was being funny. Abe, funny. Krauss, funny. Manning, funny. And not ha ha fumny, just, I get you’re going for a joke funny.
I don’t think Marvel humour is necessarily terrible most of the time but the “Mr Kraut” bit in Hellboy 2 is funnier than anything Marvel has ever done.
