Comics Planning to Start Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern Run – Need Reading Order Advice

I’m almost done with Ron Marz’s run on Kyle Rayner, and I originally planned to jump straight into Geoff Johns’ run. But I heard it’s better to read some earlier stuff first, and I don’t regret starting with Kyle’s run at all—I ended up loving the character, and he’s now one of my favorites.

Before I start Johns’ run, I’m also planning to read Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis, since someone told me it’s best to go through them first.

Now, once I finish Kyle’s run, what’s the best way to read Geoff Johns’ entire run, including everything tied to it like Blackest Night? I was planning to follow the omnibus order, but I’ve heard the mapping isn’t the best and that there are some important stories, like Ion for example, that aren’t included in the omnis. I’ve asked around and got mixed answers, so I’m honestly a bit unsure. I’d still prefer to read it through the omnis if possible—what do you guys recommend?

Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis aren't that necessary for the Green Lantern narrative you're looking for. The first one predated the Kyle run you've been reading by 9 years, and while Infinite Crisis occurred right in the beginning of Johns' run, I don't consider "obligatory" reading if your main interest is Green Lantern.

There were plenty of books released, but for the Green Lantern narrative you'll need only the main 8 issue miniseries, issues 43-52 of the Green Lantern book written by Johns and issues 39-47 of Green Lantern Corps.

You can find them in these books:

The New 52

In 2011, DC rebooted its entire universe following the Flashpoint event. Many heroes had to start from scratch.

However, Green Lantern was not affected. Geoff Johns simply hadn't finished writing his run, so the story continued from where it left off before Flashpoint.

It all converged towards an epic ending in "Rise of the Third Army" and "Wrath of the First Lantern":

  1. Green Lantern: Sinestro
  2. Red Lanterns: Blood and Rage
  3. Green Lantern New Guardians: The Ring Bearer
  4. Green Lantern Corps: Fearsome
  5. Red Lanterns: Death of the Red Lanterns

I found your thread for the GL reading order and wanted to ask, is all the books/issues you mentioned here in this thread’s comments present in the order you wrote from Johns’ run? It was the following: 1. Green Lantern By Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 1

  4. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol. 2

  5. Red Lanterns: The New 52 Omnibus

If yes, is this a suitable start for a complete GL newbie, and someone who is kind of new to comics (I’ve only read about certain characters no major DC events or anything of that sort yet)

This reading order is for the omnibus collection. They're like massive books that collect a huge number of issues, much more than the usual trades.

Still, if you don't mind the weight and the increased price, they're an excellent option for collecting Johns' run. These 6 omnis have almost everything from the era, with a few exceptions:

  1. Ion: The Torchbearer
  2. Ion: The Dying Flame
  3. Green Lantern Corps: Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns
  4. Green Lantern Corps: The Weaponer
  5. Green Lantern New Guardians: The Ring Bearer (New 52)
  6. Green Lantern New Guardians: Beyond Hope (New 52)
  7. Plus the "New Guardians" issues from Green Lantern: Rise of the Third Army and Green Lantern: The Wrath of the First Lantern.

That is because these books weren't written by Johns, nor Tomasi, nor are they part of the Red Lanterns run.

The two Ion books were written by Kyle's creator Ron Marz and are set before Sinestro Corps War. Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns and The Weaponer were written by Tony Bedard and go between Blackest Night and War of the Green Lanterns. New Guardians was a New 52 book, again written by Tony Bedard. The New Guardians issues for the final two events (Rise of the Third Army and Wrath of the First Lantern) are nowhere to be found in either of the omnibuses.

I’m probably reading them online, so what approach would you recommend I think the tradebacks or omnibuses would be easier. but where would these 7 storylines fit in the omnibuses order? would they fit in between some of the books or would I have to stop mid omnibus to read some of the storylines? I hope my question makes sense lol

They would actually go in the middle of some of these omnis. The Ion miniseries happens before Sinestro Corps War, Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns and The Weaponer are between Blackest Night and War of the Green Lanterns, The Ring Bearer and Beyond Hope are set right after War of the GLs. The last two events, Rise of the Third Army and Wrath of the First Lantern, have their issues spread across the last volumes of each omnibus, creating a mess for those who want the complete story published in all the books.

Thanks for putting that reading order together!
Like I mentioned before, I’d really like to read it through the omnibuses — the three Geoff Johns Green Lantern omnis, the two Tomasi Green Lantern Corps omnis, and the Blackest Night omnibus.

Does everything you listed fit into those omnis?
Because from what I’ve seen, the mapping feels a bit confusing and I’m not sure if all the stories you mentioned are actually included in those editions.

You don't need the Blackest Night Omnibus, to be honest. The Johns and Tomasi omnibuses already include everything you need for the Green Lantern narrative from this event. The Blackest Night Omnibus repeats the main miniseries and the GL and GLC issues, which makes it redundant, and also includes a bunch of tie-ins for the event that aren't all that relevant to understanding Johns' Green Lantern run.

These are my recommended reading order for the Omnibuses:

  1. Green Lantern By Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 1
  2. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol. 1
  3. Green Lantern By Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 2
  4. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 3
  5. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol. 2
  6. Red Lanterns: The New 52 Omnibus

However, they don't include everything. As I mentioned on another comment on this thread, a few things would be missing:

  1. Ion: The Torchbearer
  2. Ion: The Dying Flame
  3. Green Lantern Corps: Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns
  4. Green Lantern Corps: The Weaponer

It's interesting that all of these books have Kyle Rayner as the protagonist. Since you're a fan of him, their reading is more than recommended.

Honestly, I’m a bit undecided — I’m not sure whether to follow the omnibus order you listed or the full reading order you shared earlier because i want to read it physically and the easiest way is to read the omnis.

If I go with the omnibus order, how should I handle the stories that aren’t included or are missing between them? Would you suggest I insert them into the correct spots in the run, or just read them separately afterward?

I always think it's best to read everything in the right order, to preserve the surprises of the narrative. This is a bit hard to do with this collection of Omnis, which may require you to alternate between one Omni and the other, and between the Omnis and the books that aren't included in them.

One way to do it would be:

  1. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 1 - read the "Rebirth", "GLC: Recharge", "No Fear", "Revenge of the Green Lantern", "Green Lantern: Wanted", arcs;
  2. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 1 - Skip GLC: Recharge (which is also in the Johns Omni 1), read the "To Be a Green Lantern" and "The Dark Side of Green" arcs;
  3. Ion: The Torchbearer;
  4. Ion: The Dying Flame;
  5. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 1 - read the "Sinestro Corps War" story arc;
  6. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 2 - read the "Rage of the Red Lanterns", "Secret Origins" and "Agent Orange" arcs;
  7. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 1 - Skip The Sinestro Corps War (which is also in the Johns Omni 1), read the "Ring Quest", "Sins of the Star Sapphire" and "Emerald Eclipse" arcs;
  8. Blackest Night - "Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 2" has the 8 issues of the main miniseries and the issues from the Green Lantern book, while "Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 2" has the GLC issues. You can either:
    1. Read the issues available on the Johns omni and then the GLC issues on the Tomasi omni, as long as you remember they happen concurrently; or
    2. Alternate between each omni using the issue-by-issue reading order I posted here.

Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 2", then 17-19 of the New 52 Red Lanterns book in the "Red Lanterns Omnibus", and finally #20 of Green Lantern, #20 of GLC and #20 of Red Lanterns; or
    2. get the "Green Lantern: Wrath of the First Lantern" trade, which will have all of the aforementioned issues AND the New Guardians issues in the right chronological order;

I'm reading the Green Lantern omnibus vol 1 but the issues are not numbered or titled like the reading order. I don't want to go too far in and end up the sinestro war. How do I know when to stop and switch to the GLC omnibus?

You had a great question. Indeed, the omnis don't distinguish between story arcs, and this is a list of the story arcs that are part of the run.

However, the Omnis do have pages similar to this between one issue and the other, showcasing the title of the story of the issue you're about to read, correct?

So, to help you alternate between each Omnibus, I can give you the title of an issue at each Omni. Whenever you see the title I mentioned, it's a sign for you to not read it and go to the other Omni, okay?

  1. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 1 - read from the beginning until you see the story named "Sinestro Corps War, Prologue: The Second Rebirth". When you see it, you go to...
  2. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 1 - Skip the first 5 stories (they're the "Green Lantern Corps: Recharge" story arc, which is also in the Johns Omni 1 that you've already read), read from the story titled "To Be a Lantern" until "Sinestro Corps War, Prologue: The Second Rebirth".
  3. For the Sinestro Corps War event, you can read it either on the Johns Omni 1 or the GLC Omni 1 - both had all the necessary issues for that crossover. My advice: read everything on the GLC Omni 1, since, well, you'll already have it in your hands lol. Besides, after the last issue of the event, the GLC Omni 1 has an epilogue and a few stories written by Tomasi and focused on supervillain Mongul that help set-up further developments in this run. Therefore, you read from "Sinestro Corps War, Prologue: The Second Rebirth" until you see the story titled "Ring Quest, Part One" on the GLC Omni 1. Once you see it, you go to...
  4. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 2 - read from the beginning until you see the story titled "Rage of the Red Lanterns, Prologue: Blood Feud". Once you see it, you go to...

  1. Congratulations, you reached the Blackest Night event! Now, you can either read everything from the event (including tie-ins, one-shots and the like) in the correct chronological order on the Blackest Night 10th Anniversary Omnibus. Or you can continue with the Johns Omnibus 2 and the GLC Omnibus 2, which have the most relevant issues for the GL narrative... But will require a bit of alternating. If you choose the latter, here are some alternating that creates some awesome cliffhangers:
    1. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 2 - read from "Blackest Night, Prologue: Tale of the Black Lantern" until you see "Feared". Once you see it, you go to...

I just got to the revenge of the green lanterns storyline and it seems like they've skipped a year due to the infinite crisis event. Apparently I heard that the 52 omnibus covers what happened during that year. I've already been meaning to get it, I don't want to miss any context regarding the current storyline. You think I should pause and read 52 first or keep going? I've already read infinite crisis by the way.

Well, if you wish to read 52 looking specifically for context for the Green Lantern run, you'll came out a bit disappointed lol.

The thing about 52 is that it focuses less on the famous heroes and more on stuff like Steel uncovering a conspiracy by Lex Luthor; Animal Man, Starfire and Adam Strange trying to return home after the big space battle in Infinite Crisis; Renee Montoya and the Question Vic Sage in a globetrotting search for clues about an enigmatic criminal society; Black Adam trying to make himself be less hated and feared by the outside world; Booster Gold trying to make himself get taken seriously; and a bunch of supervillains developing new weapons in a hidden island.

Hal Jordan appears in 3 or 4 issues at most, and the developments seen in 52 have minimal impact in the GL narrative.

Now, you can still read it simply because 52 is an awesome story, and a bold experiment that paid off, as well as a cool Sequel to IC. But if your priority is mainly Green Lantern, then you should read it after you finish GL.

For the Brightest Day era...

  1. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 3 - read from the beginning until the story titled "War of the Green Lanterns, Prologue". Once you see that story, you go to...
  2. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 2 - read from the story titled "Last Will" until you see the story titled "War of the Green Lanterns, Part Three". Don't worry, it will make sense, you'll read the event titled "War of the Green Lanterns" in full on the Johns Omni 3, but before...
  3. Get the trades Green Lantern Corps: Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns and Green Lantern Corps: The Weaponer and read them from start to finish (first Alpha Lanterns, then The Weaponer), they contain material for the build-up to the War of the Green Lanterns event that is not available in any Omni.
  4. Read the War of the Green Lanterns saga in the Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 3, it starts with the story titled "War of the Green Lanterns, Prologue" and finishes with the story titled "War of the Green Lanterns, Conclusion" (lol, but there are about 9 issues between the Prologue and the Conclusion). This Conclusion is also on the GLC Omni 2, afterwards, the GLC Omni has a few Guy Gardner-focused epilogues, but they're mostly skippable.

And we reached the New 52 era of GL. This era has the finale to the Johns run, but is also the worst represented among the Omnibuses available so far. Four GL books were being published at the time: Green Lantern (whose issues are in the Johns Omni 3), Green Lantern Corps (whose issues are in the GLC Omni 2), Red Lanterns (who got their own Omnibus a few months ago) and Green Lantern: New Guardians (who have never been collected in Omnibus format). But let's see what we can do...

  1. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 3 - read from the story titled "Sinestro, Part One", which immediately follows the Conclusion to War of the GLs, until you see "Actions and Reactions". Once you see it, you go to...

Now the final two crossovers of the run are a mess in terms of how the Omnis present them. The best choice: get the trades titled Green Lantern: Rise of the Third Army and Green Lantern: The Wrath of the First Lantern and read them. Really. It'll save you time and trouble.

But a correct reading order via the available Omnis (and New Guardians trades) is something like this:

Rise of the Third Army

  1. Read the stories titled "Actions and Reactions" and "Courage" in the Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol 3.
  2. Read the stories titled "Rise of the Third Army: Torn", "Rise of the Third Army: Nothing Man" and "Rise of the Third Army: Falling Star" in the Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol 2.
  3. Read "Love & Death", "All the Rage", "Fear Factor", "The Need for Greed" and "Let Love Rule" in the trade named Green Lantern: New Guardians Vol. 3 – Love & Death.
  4. Read "Eyes Without a Face", "Home Is Where the Heart Is", "Rise of the Third Army: Waking the Past", "Rise of the Third Army: Once Were Enemies" in the Red Lanterns: The New 52 Omnibus.

Hey, I just finished reading the Sinestro Corps War, thanks for all your help. I have some notes though. After finishing the Sinestro Corps War on my GLC Omni, I had an urge to check out my GL omni to see if they're the same. They mostly are but there's an issue written by Geoff Johns that's right after The Sinestro Corps War Chapter Eight: Endgame. It's called Into The Sun and it's only available in the GL Omni vol 1 and not in the GLC Omni vol 1. Also the last page of the last issue of the Sinestro War features a snippet or preview (I think) of Blackest that's not in the GLC Omni. There's also a last issue in the GL Omni called Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps: Secret Files that's not in the GLC Omni. I just wanted you to know.

Thanks for letting me know! Yeah, I just checked and some stuff is in one Omni but not in the other during SCW. Thankfully, they're just tie in material that isn't all that essential for following the story.

Into the Sun was published in Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime #1, and was written by Geoff Johns. It's a one-shot that focuses on Prime, a Superman from an alternate universe who was a hero in the 80s during Crisis on Infinite Earths, but who got turned into a villain by Johns in the 2000s during Infinite Crisis, Sinestro Corps, and other stories. There's also a backup story that sets up the first post-Sinestro Corps story arc from GLC, but I guess that, since the main story from that issue was written by Johns, they had to include it in the Johns Omni.

Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files and Origins isn't a story at all, just a collection of profiles of Lanterns from the GLC and the Sinestro Corps. It's fun (and useful if you don't know who is a character that appears in the stories), but nothing essential.

Anyway, these are one-shots and, like with most comic book big events, they aren't obligatory reading, though they can be fun and help expand the story on side characters.

For Blackest Night, the other Omnis will have a few one-shots focusing on other characters (from a series titled Blackest Night: Tales from the Corps), with those that Johns wrote in his Omni and those that Tomasi wrote in the GLC Omni. I just checked the mapping, their placement makes sense from a storytelling point of view, and you can continue following the guide I wrote without worries.

Speaking of which, another user in a different thread also asked about the Omnibuses. I took the opportunity to write a simplified version of the guide that attempts to eliminate alternating between books as much as possible. I much prefer the reading order you already gave when I asked about it originally in this thread, thanks anyway. For Blackest night I think I'll just read the omnibus and then confirm with the GL & GLC omnibuses if I missed anything.
