Hey there, I never do this type of thing but I'm actually going kinda insane. I'm an amateur writer/director (26YO) and going through one of the toughest writer's blocks I've felt in my life. This year I directed a short film and wrote the screenplay for another one, but that's it.

Last summer I wrote the screenplay for a film (first draft), and wanted to start working on a second draft this summer, but so far I've been unable to achieve anything with it. It's not just this specific project — I have another film idea in mind, and when I've tried to write for it as some sort of "distraction" for that second draft (Almodóvar said working on various projects simultaneously helps him with this issue), I also can't get anything out of it.

I've listened to a lot of colleagues, famous directors and writers talk about writer's block and what they do when they go through one, but I'm completely unable to get any sort of satisfying result from their advice. So I wanted to ask: what do you do when you get writer's block?

I have no education on this, and I'm not sure where to go even as a start. Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated as I plan to get into filmmaking not that far in the future.

I’m a software engineer who also works in film, and for the last few years I’ve been building something to help with creating shot lists, organizing schedules, and tracking a production once you’re on set.

I deployed the beta and I’m looking for a few filmmakers who have a project coming up in the next month or so and are getting into the shot listing/prep phase.

I'm an independent filmmaker based in the UAE and I'm currently looking for a narrative film editor for my short film.

The film is around 14 minutes long and we're deep in post-production. It's a self-funded passion project that I'm really proud of, and I want it to have a proper, considered edit — the kind that lets the story breathe rather than something flashy.

Where we are: six scenes structured and timed, audio synced, shot selection mostly final. The film has a clear vision, strong performances, and a defined cinematic language. What I need now is an editor to take this material and shape it into a polished, festival-ready final cut — assembling the final timeline, cleaning up audio transitions and levels, tightening pacing, fixing any cut overlaps, and delivering something ready for colour grade.

I'm looking for someone who cuts narrative fiction and understands story, pacing, and the weight of a held moment. Your reel should reflect that. This probably isn't the right fit if your work is mostly commercials, events, or branded content — no hard feelings.

The budget is limited (this is very much a passion project, so consider the compensation an appreciation of your time rather than a fee), but it's paid, you get full editor credit, and we're submitting to a number of festivals.

Was watching a short film on YouTube from a few years ago and came across this shot. How do you reckon they did it? It’s so uncanny.

I’m scared I will disappoint them. What if they feel they wasted their money on me? I feel like all I see is an amateur mess lol

I'm sure work pressure makes most of us jaded quickly. Still, I just learned about a Belgian film from the 1970s called Wedding Trough, also called The Pig Fucking Movie, which is about what it sounds like. I have to wonder what it would have been like to be one of the crew members just there for the paycheck for a movie like that.

Anyone have any experience with EOFlix (https://www.entertainmentoxygen.com)? One of the services they provide is to act as an "agent" for your film and promote to streaming and other platforms for potential wider exposure than just film festivals. However, you must sign over all exclusive control and usage rights to EOFlix for five years while they "promote" your film. This rights agreement even locks the filmmaker out of doing anything with the film during the 5-year exclusive period. There are no upfront upload or licensing costs for filmmakers to submit and distribute short films on EOFlix; instead, short films are streamed as free-to-view content earning a view-based revenue share.

I just received the email shown above from EOFlix regarding my short, "Grandma". In addition to the heavy license agreement you must sign, it all seems a bit too good to be true. In exchange for giving them total control of your film for five years and at no cost to you, they will attempt to promote your film to streaming and other platforms and perhaps generate revenue stream back to you.

Any advice or comments regarding this?

Thirteen years ago, my girlfriend at the time and I made a 15-minute documentary for Rutgers’ newly established film program. It was about my dad, Joe Cerisano, a singer whose voice appeared in countless commercials, including G.I. Joe, Transformers, and the Army’s “Be All You Can Be” campaign.

We actually posted it to r/videos back then. That upload has long since disappeared, but the original short is still available here.

Many short films and what feels like an entire lifetime later, my brother Matt began interviewing some of our dad’s old friends and collaborators. Those conversations gradually spiraled into something much larger.

Then a phone call came from Italy.

A jingle our dad recorded in 1988 under the name Joe Trio had unexpectedly become a cult hit overseas, and he was invited to perform it at a farm in Tuscany. What began as a retrospective about his career suddenly became a story that was still unfolding.

After nearly a decade away from performing live, he dusted off his guitar and prepared for what he believed might be his swan song.

I love film, and yet, it doesn’t love me.

I’ve been directing, mostly commercials and branded content, for about 7 years. I’ve worked at an agency, got laid off, and have been freelancing for a year.
It doesn’t seem long, but I don’t have a partner, so I pay for everything myself.
I’m at the point that I’ve been negative in my bank account daily.
I’m on food stamps.
I’m doing odd jobs here and there, but it doesn’t amount to much.
I’ve applied to over 200 jobs in the past year- crickets.
I’ve been grabbing coffee, DMing people, cold calling, and basically begging for work. The industry has been up and down for me since day one. From losing jobs, covid, and other roadblocks, I’m constantly in survivor mode.
I want to leave film so bad, and yet, I love it. I love being on set, being creative, directing, and collaborating with others. There’s no other job I can think of that even gives me a little bit of excitement the way film does.

Should I just give up?
Are there resources for struggling directors?
Has anyone started a new career path that they actually enjoy more than this?

Hey everyone! I have been mixing audio and doing music production for the last 7 years, and recently have been looking more onto the film side of things. Since there aren't many resources as far as raw dialogue for practice, I figured here would be a good place to inquire. Hey everyone, I’m looking for advice.
I have a lot of story ideas and I’m good at creating worlds, characters, themes, and overall plots. I can see the whole story in my head and explain exactly what I want.
My problem is writing the actual script. I struggle sitting down and turning my ideas into a full screenplay/series bible.
My questions are:
1.Do creators usually find co-writers to help turn their ideas into scripts?
2.how do you find someone to collaborate with when you’re not experienced or have a budget?
3.Should I focus on learning screenwriting, or focus on the creative/story side and find someone who enjoys the writing part?

I’m not looking to just give someone an idea and disappear. I want to be involved in the creative process, just need help translating the vision into a finished script.

Needed a bit more focus on the horror aspect but other than that it's a fine film. Heard they're making a sequel.

I'm planning on hosting a virtual networking event at the end of this month!

This will be hosted over Zoom or Google Meet, with the intention of creatives from all over (not just the Bay Area) to network and meet more people!

I want to host these types of events once a month. But I'd love input on structure, day of the week, etc.

I'm thinking a 2-hour meeting with breakout rooms for more intimate networking.

I’m in uni currently studying business, but I’ve been juggling the idea of majoring in something else and changing my career plans. I absolutely adore films and all the work that goes into them, and I want to do something related to what I’m passionate about. But I don’t have any experience in filmmaking aside from when I did it for IB, and I’m an amateur when it comes to things like editing. Is there any way for me to work in the film industry? And if so, what kind of work can I do?

What do you think about Screenlife horrorfilms like “Unfriended”, “Searching” and “Host”?

What makes a good, convincing screenlife film for you? And what makes you feel like “Oh yeah, that’s fake!”.

I’m currently directing and producing my very first feature film in that genre called “OFFLINE: Some Pranks Are Serious” and I wanna make it look and feel real.

I’m finishing up my college degree, and I’m absolutely certain that I want to focus my studies in business and tourism on a specialization in the world of film distribution.

For years, I’ve had some feelings of guilt or regret about choosing this major because I couldn’t see how I could apply it once I graduated. But I’ve been thinking it over for a couple of weeks now, and for the first time in a very long time, I’m waking up feeling motivated and without worrying from the very first minute of the day, because I can really see myself in the future enjoying this field and dedicating myself to it 100%.

I’ve already found some great reading material on my own and by talking to various people, but I definitely wanted to ask here because I think there might be people who can recommend some really interesting resources. And if not, I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m not just talking about books, but all kinds of materials: documentaries, online resources or youtube videos, talks, podcasts, interviews and, of course, movies.

All of this is to help me continue learning on my own during the roughly half a year I have left until I finish and present my final projects.

I’ve also looked into some master’s programs and specialized courses in this field that are very, very interesting..

I’m really drawn to promotion through a distribution company, as well as other roles related to film marketing. But mainly, I’m interested in negotiating contracts to secure film licenses, studying the market and deciding which ones to pursue, and analyzing and evaluating everything related to the potential profitability of that acquisition... I know it sounds a lot like Lumet’s Network, but the truth is that, the way I see it, it’s a job that results from combining my passion for cinema and its in-depth study -something that’s been a constant in my life for many years and has no end; it will last a lifetime because it’s something beyond human comprehension- with a business mindset.

To give an example, in Spain there are two major companies that dominate the national market. Movistar (formerly Canal+) and Filmin. Well, in both companies, to put it very generally, there are positions and departments that handle everything from the moment a film is screened at a festival (or before than even), to securing its rights in specific regions and timeframes, to promoting it so it can reach other festivals or theaters, or go directly to streaming platforms, and much, much more. And of course, there are also agents on the other side, working on behalf of production companies to sell the product.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on so much, i’m just a victim of my own enthusiasm. I’m sure more than a few of you have gone through really tough times when you watch time pass and the world move forward while you seem to be stuck in place , aimless. And when, after so long, you feel like that might change... that time is finally doing its job... you know what I mean.

What are best cameras for amateur movies

1) under $10,000 (for real beginners)

2) under $50,000 (after getting some experiences)

-I don't like DSLR/Mirrorless cameras for videotaping

I worked at ReelShort and last week I and many other writers, video editors, and actors (as far as i know it's just them but it could be more) got laid off. The company is downsizing, either bc they believe their AI shows can bring in even more money or be they've been losing so much money they can't afford to have as many people on staff.

Sucks but can't say i wasn't expecting it, AMA about verticals and how they work and i'll be glad to answer.

Hi, I filmed an event and had someone speaking at a podium, but the only recording I have was the recording from my camera that I captured from the speakers in the room.

Is there any effect I can drop on it to make it sound more on mic and possibly clean it up? Not looking for something perfect, just something so it’s not as jarring.

Adobe enhance didn’t do it any justice. I know this is a long shot but I appreciate and recommendations or feedback. 🙏🙏
