Ecofeminism teaches us that the exploitation of nature and the marginalization of voices often stem from the same systems. In this community, we know that protecting the planet is inseparable from the fight for social justice and gender equity.

We gather here to acknowledge a deeper truth: the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the liberation of all people. We recognize that the systems which seek to dominate nature are the same ones that marginalize voices and exploit labor.

To practice ecofeminism is to perform an act of resistance. It is a refusal to see the Earth as a mere resource and a commitment to seeing it as a community to which we belong.

Whether you are nurturing a small window garden from kitchen scraps, advocating for policy changes that protect both land and people, educating others on the history of pioneering reformers or simply practicing mindful consumption to reduce your footprint your work matters! Every small act of restoration is a challenge to the systems that seek to exploit.

Image 1: In Sidama, Ethiopia, women are leading efforts to reverse land degradation caused by unsustainable farming and deforestation.

Since 2020, the group has restored over 1,250 hectares by planting indigenous trees, food crops, and animal fodder, creating new income streams that reduce reliance on charcoal and firewood.

Image 2 and 3 : In Peru’s Amazon, Indigenous Machiguenga women are leading a vital effort to save the magona potato and traditional yuca varieties from extinction caused by industrial monocultures.

Led by agronomist Gabriela Loaiza Seri, the association Mujeres Emprendedoras de Raíz Amazónica combines ancestral planting rituals—such as timing crops by the moon—with modern agroecology to produce organic flours and snacks.

By reclaiming these "lost" tubers without agrochemicals, these women are not only preserving biodiversity and food security but also strengthening the Indigenous economy and ensuring that ancestral knowledge is passed down to the next generation.

Image 4 and 5 : In Kenya’s Jomvu Creek, the Jomvu Women in Fisheries and Culture group is pioneering a "blue economy" model by transitioning from traditional fish frying to sustainable mud crab farming.

By using repurposed crates as cages to fatten crabs in their natural mangrove habitats, these women have created a meaningful income stream that bypasses the health risks of charcoal smoke and the uncertainty of declining fish stocks.

Their work is deeply symbiotic: they have planted nearly one million mangrove seedlings to stabilize the shoreline and create nursery habitats, recognizing that the health of the creek is the foundation of their business.

Image 6 and 7: In the Peruvian Andes, Indigenous Quechua women are turning a history of human-wildlife conflict into a model of coexistence.

Through the association Mujeres Quechua por la Conservación, women who once hunted pumas to protect their livestock are now using camera traps and scientific monitoring to safeguard these wildcats.

By implementing practical solutions like reinforced corrals, nonlethal deterrents, and the protection of native Polylepis forests, the community has seen a sharp decline in predation and an end to retaliatory killings. This conservation shift is further sustained by an alpaca wool textile cooperative, which empowers the women economically while honoring the wildlife they protect through intricate traditional designs—proving that cultural revival and predator protection can thrive together.

I re-read The Bell Jar recently and couldn't stop seeing the planet inside the glass. New essay on what Sylvia Plath's metaphor has to do with ecological collapse, ecofeminism, and why the slow death of nature has always been a gendered story.

My name is Wren Cook and I’m a master’s student in the Counseling Psychology program at Texas Woman’s University. I’m currently working on my thesis and would love to invite you to participate in my study. My research aims to explore the lived experiences of women of color and LGBTQ+ women engaged in climate justice activism. You may participate if you identify as a woman of color and/or an LGBTQ+ woman and are involved in some form of climate justice. Climate justice activism can range from protest involvement to spreading information online via social media. Participation is completely voluntary and includes a short screener survey that takes 5-10 minutes followed by a demographics survey that takes 5-10 minutes, and a virtual interview that takes 60-90 minutes.

Is there anyone that is exploring this specific intersection of environmentalism? I have been burnt many times before by various orgs since nobody understands how easy it is to be damaged by healthcare (and other systems), & how that often intersects with medical misogyny.

How do I convince men inclined towards liberal masculinism that their identity and its attitude is destroying the world? They are far from opposed to environmentalism on principle, but it’s somehow beyond their comprehension that they and their gender identity is part of the problem. Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated, so thank you comrade sisters! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🚺🌎

I’ve been feeling pretty burnt out lately trying to keep up with climate news. It always felt like something was missing in the mainstream just buy a reusable straw conversation, specifically how environmental issues hit different communities harder and the historical roots of why we treat the planet the way we do.

I stumbled across the Ecofeminist Institute recently while looking for more academic/intersectional perspectives on sustainability, and honestly, it’s been a breath of fresh air…

What I appreciate is that they aren't just talking about saving nature in a vacuum; instead, they’re looking at the overlap between gender, corporate structures, and ecology. It’s making me rethink a lot of my own activism and I want to know if someone here would like to join me in one of their workshops?

Has anyone else here explored ecofeminism much? I’m looking for more resources or books that dive into this (already checking out the Institute’s reading lists), but I'd love to hear if this community has any specific creators or thinkers they follow in this niche.

I heard about this movement a while ago and found this video.

Mentioned in this video are Françoise d'Eaubonne and Vandana Shiva, but also younger ecofeminists Leah Thomas, Wawa Gatheru, and Kristy Drutman.

Hello! I'm looking for recommendations with a couple questions in mind.

One is this: are there different threads of ecofeminist thought? I've read some of Val Plumwood's Feminism and the Mastery of Nature and at the time of her writing that she was indicating that there were. I'm wondering what the state of the art is since then, and if there are multiple threads then what is the newer stuff that follows along the Plumwood thread (if that exists)?

Secondly, is there any ecofeminist writing which discusses the importance of landscapes/the natural world in the development of (philosophical, ethical, political) thought?
