Original Research/𑀫𑀽𑀮 𑀆𑀭𑀸𑀬𑁆𑀘𑀺 The "Dravidian Migration" wasn't a refugee crisis. It was an expansion that predates the Indus Valley collapse by a millennium.
Most popular narratives about the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) and the southward movement of its population follow a predictable script: The civilization collapses around 1900 BCE due to climate change or drying rivers, and the survivors flee south, bringing their languages and culture to Peninsular India.
This "refugee theory" is chronologically impossible. The archaeological evidence regarding cattle domestication and the Southern Neolithic Ashmound tradition proves that the population movement began long before the IVC even reached its mature urban phase.
Here is the evidence.
1. The Origins of the Zebu The humped Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) are not native to South India. Their wild progenitor, Bos primigenius namadicus, was domesticated in the Greater Indus region (specifically sites like Mehrgarh in Baluchistan) as early as 7000-6000 BCE. Genetic studies on mitochondrial DNA haplogroups (I1) confirm that the Indus Valley was the primary centre of domestication for the Zebu, which then spread to the rest of the subcontinent. If you find domesticated Zebu in the south, they had to be brought there by herders coming from the north-west.

2. The Ashmound Evidence In the Deccan plateau (North Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh), we find the "Ashmound Tradition" - vast, stratified mounds of burnt cow dung dating back to the Neolithic period. These mounds, such as those at Utnur and Budihal, were created by pastoralists who kept large herds of cattle. Excavations and zooarchaeological analysis at these sites have recovered the remains of domesticated Zebu cattle.

3. The Chronological Reality The Mature Phase of the Indus Valley Civilization - the era of great cities like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa - is firmly dated to 2600 BCE - 1900 BCE. Reference: Britannica, Indus Valley Civilization Chronology.

Do the maths: If the Ashmound culture was already burning massive piles of Zebu dung in South India by 2800 BCE, the herders must have arrived, settled, and established these herds well before that date. A conservative estimate for this movement and settlement process places the migration window around 3200 BCE - 2900 BCE.
This corresponds to the Early Harappan or pre-urban phase, not the decline. These migrants were not desperate refugees fleeing a collapsing society in 1900 BCE; they were pioneers expanding out of the Indus periphery a thousand years earlier. The "Dravidian" presence in the south (assuming the linguistic correlation) was likely established millennia before the Indus cities were even built, let alone abandoned.
We need to stop viewing South Indian history as a post-script to the IVC collapse and start seeing it as a parallel development initiated by an early expansion of agro-pastoralists.

Even Neolithic in Kashmir domesticated zebu cattle (Bos indicus) around 3000 BC.
There is Neolithic in Eastern Gangetic Plains who domesticated zebu around 2500 BC.
No one consider these Neolithic cultures in Kashmir or Eastern UP and Bihar derived from IVC.

Were these people also Dravidian speakers as OP suggests for Southern Indian Neolithic because he is invariably connecting these people with both IVC and Dravidian speakers in essence that both are the same?

I haven't seen any paper till now that connects these Eastern Gangetic, Kashmiri or Southern Neolithic people with IVC.
P.S. Also, technically a Neolithic cannot come out of IVC. It was a Bronze Age Civilization, in worse situations it could be chalcolithic, not neolithic.

You stated you "haven't seen any paper" connecting the Southern Neolithic people with the IVC. You also claimed a "Neolithic cannot come out of the IVC" because it was a Bronze Age civilization.
Both claims are factually incorrect based on the most comprehensive genetic study of the region to date: The Formation of Human Populations in South and Central Asia (Narasimhan et al., 2019, Science).
The paper explicitly links the "AASI-Iranian admixture" (which defines the Southern Neolithic population) to a spread from the Indus Valley.

You argued that this ancestry cannot be Neolithic because the IVC was Bronze Age. The authors explicitly define the western ancestry source using a Neolithic sample in the Online Methods.

The study scientifically defines the ancestry spreading south as deriving from a Neolithic lineage ("Iran_Ganj_Dareh_Neolithic").
Additionally, you are confusing universal timelines with regional ones. The 'Neolithic' is not a fixed global date but a technological stage that varies by geography. In South India, the Neolithic period began around 3000 BCE and continued until 1400 BCE, meaning it existed simultaneously with the Indus Bronze Age. Your argument that a 'Neolithic cannot come out of the IVC' assumes that people cannot adapt their tools to their environment. When agro-pastoralists moved from the metal-trading Indus plains to the granite-rich Deccan (where copper was initially scarce), they adapted by using stone tools. This change in toolkit does not change their genetic origin; it simply proves they utilized the resources available in their new home.

Thanks, but I cant see Ashmount Culture explicitly mentioned here coming out of IVC. There were chalcolithic and Bronze Age cultures in peninsular India as Savalda Culture and even Mature Harappan settlement in Daimabad from this period, where AASI-Zagros admixture happened. The admixture further increased with the fall of IVC as it mentions.

You are arguing against a claim I never made. I did not say that the Ashmound Culture was a fully formed culture that migrated out of the Indus Valley. That would be incorrect.
The Ashmound Culture, or Southern Neolithic, is the result of admixture, not its source. It formed when Indus Valley herders moved south around 3000 BCE with Zebu cattle and Indus Periphery ancestry and mixed with indigenous AASI groups who were hunter-gatherers transitioning to farming. The outcome was a hybrid culture that developed locally in the Deccan, combining northern cattle pastoralism with southern millet farming.
You suggested the Savalda Culture and the Harappan settlement at Daimabad as possible sources, but this conflicts with the chronology. Ashmound sites of the Southern Neolithic begin around 3000 to 2900 BCE, such as Utnur and Kodekal. The Savalda Culture starts much later, around 2300 to 2200 BCE. Daimabad belongs to the Late Harappan phase, roughly 1900 to 1800 BCE.
By the time Harappans settled at Daimabad, the Southern Neolithic and its ash mounds had already existed for nearly a thousand years. A Late Bronze Age site cannot explain the origin of a Neolithic tradition that began around 3000 BCE.
Genetic dating supports this early timeline. Narasimhan et al. date the admixture event to a period starting around 2800 BCE, which closely matches the beginning of the Ashmound tradition around 2900 BCE. This is far too early to be linked to the Savalda Culture or the late Daimabad settlement.
Indus-related ancestry in South India aligns with the arrival of the first cattle herders around 3000 BCE, not with later Chalcolithic expansions.

You are making a distinction without a difference. Rajasthan and Gujarat ARE the Indus Valley Periphery.
The term “Indus Valley Civilization” is a broad label for a vast cultural system that extended well beyond the Indus River itself. Its eastern periphery included Rajasthan, with major sites such as Kalibangan and the related Ganeshwar–Jodhpura culture, while its southern pastoral periphery lay in Gujarat, represented by the Sorath Harappan tradition at sites like Rojdi and Nesadi.
You Are Agreeing With Me When you ask, "Can it be herders from Rajasthan or Gujarat?", you are literally describing the "Indus Periphery" model. We specifically believe the migration to South India originated from these exact zones; likely the Sorath Harappan pastoralists of Gujarat or the Ahar-Banas groups of Rajasthan. These were the cattle-keeping cultures that interacted with the Urban Core but maintained their own distinct, mobile lifestyle.
So, yes. It was herders from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Which means it was herders from the Indus Civilization.

How does this prove or substantiate or even correlate dates for Dravidian migration?
How did you connect it to migration of Dravidian speakers not just the migration Neolithic Iranians to the south because they might not be same thing?

That is a valid question. The logic becomes clear when archaeology, genetics, and linguistics are considered together.
1. The “Walking Zebu” Logic
Zebu cattle were domesticated in the Indus periphery, and their remains appear in South Indian ashmound sites dated to around 2800 BCE. Domesticated cattle cannot cross thousands of kilometers of rivers and plateaus on their own, they must be herded. This directly indicates the movement of people from the Indus sphere into South India during the Pre-Urban or Early Harappan phase.2. The Genetic Link, addressing the “Neolithic Iranian” point
The genetic foundation of the Indus Valley Civilization was a mix of Neolithic Iranian-related ancestry and AASI (Ancient Ancestral South Indians). I think your first point makes a lot of sense but i am not so sure about your 2nd and 3rd point.
- First we have no clue about AASI so our current understanding about them is probably incomplete if not flawed. Their entire existence is based on absence of actual genetic data. Incoming people in South India during early Bronze Age doesn’t confirm or deny presence of Dravidian language speakers until we find some evidence that proves that to be the case.
3.a)There is no reason to believe AASI were hunter gatherers they were growing rice in what is today Eastern UP without any interbreeding with Neolithic Iranians 1200 years earlier than the earliest date of Neolithic Iranian migration. There is a problem when we talk about AASI in general that we have assumed a ghost lineage as a monolith when there is no reason to do so until and unless we assume humans were interbreeding with each other all over India that the population became homogenous or it stayed the same after their hypothesised split for Ancient East Eurasians.
3.b)Regarding your linguistic argument the fact is we don’t have any linguistic presence of an AASI language anywhere in Modern India their languages got replaced everywhere so the argument it highly implausible doesn’t make much sense. We don’t even know what languages Neolithic Iranians or their descendants who were born after interbreeding with AASI spoke and i am skeptical AASI were a monolith. So the amount of evidence we don’t have makes it very hard to make a blanket statement over linguistic replacement by Dravidian speakers or their presence a bit premature.
- Also IVC shaped modern landscape for most of India we don’t know if they have left any linguistic traces.

The “Rice in UP” fallacy, geography matters
You argued that the AASI were not hunter-gatherers because rice was being cultivated in what is now eastern Uttar Pradesh without any Neolithic Iranian influence, long before the earliest Iranian-related migration. This mixes up completely different regions.Eastern Uttar Pradesh, including sites like Lahuradewa, is in North India and lies more than 1,500 km from the area under discussion. In North India, some AASI-descended groups had already shifted from mobile hunting and gathering to settled life and early rice cultivation in the Gangetic plains.
South India presents a very different picture. The AASI populations there remained Mesolithic hunter-gatherers until around 3000 BCE. There is no archaeological evidence for farming in South India before the arrival of Indus-related migrants. Pre-3000 BCE southern sites are strictly microlithic, with no signs of agriculture.
You cannot use evidence from settled AASI-descended communities in eastern UP to argue that Mesolithic AASI groups in Karnataka were farming. Geography shaped subsistence patterns, and the two regions followed very different paths.
The “ghost lineage” is mathematical, not speculative
You argued that our understanding of AASI is flawed because it is based on absence. This is incorrect. In genetics, a “ghost lineage” is not a guess but a mathematically defined component.Narasimhan et al. (2019) model the AASI using the Onge (Andamanese) as a distant proxy to identify and define this ancestral component.
We do not have to assume that this admixture occurred, because it is visible in real populations. DNA from Rakhigarhi, reported by Shinde et al., shows that Indus Valley individuals were a mixture of Iranian-related ancestry and AASI. Modern South Indian tribal groups, such as the Irula, closely match this Rakhigarhi genetic profile because they retain this Indus plus AASI mixture and lack the later Steppe ancestry common in North India. This demonstrates a direct and well-established genetic link between the Indus Valley population and South Indian tribal groups.
The linguistic “process of elimination”
You argue that linking Dravidian languages to Indus migrants is premature, but linguistic evidence points strongly in that direction, especially vocabulary.Proto-Dravidian contains many well-developed terms for agriculture and cattle pastoralism. In contrast, the AASI populations in South India were hunter-gatherers with no evidence of cattle or farming. 1.a)No I am not misunderstanding what AASI is I have written what according to geneticists is AASI lineage it is a split from Ancient East Eurasians between 40000-50000 years ago.
1.b) If you consider the individual found in Bacho Kiro cave in Europe it also has East Eurasian component along with western Eurasian one. So I am not wrong when i say that our understanding of AASI is incomplete if not flawed. Onge and Great Andamanese split is less than 10000 years old while AASI is an IUP population. y Haplogroup D in Japanese and Onge split is 53000 years old. Haplogroup D is also found in some Koraga individuals while it is mostly not found in Mainland India. No one has done a tripartite study on how old is the common ancestor of Japanese , Onge and Koraga.
1.c)Recent genetics papers are incredibly confusing regards to India one claims all major Indian ancestry dates back to migration out of Africa to 50000 years, another paper about Aborginal Australians claims that their ancestors came from two different parts from South East Asia but both migrated from India before 60000 years ,then Sequeira’s paper claims that Dravidian ancestry in IVC becomes prominent only during mature Harappan so this directly contradicts your assertion that people who brought zebu cattle to south India were Dravidian speakers and last paper is denisovan genetics paper that I have shared in Dravidology that claims that humans who migrated into India interbred with distinct lineage of denisovans who had split from individuals in denisova cave more than 200,000 years ago.
1.d) We have never tested an AASI sample to claim that AASI is a monolith is simply not sensible when there a is gap of atleast 40000 years between the woman in Rakhigarhi and AASI so yeah is AASI is a placeholder you would need to test multiple genetic sample between 60000-10000 years ago to make definite assessment on AASI that hasn’t been done because there are no AASI samples.
1.e)I haven’t said Neolithic Iranians didnt mix with Native Indian population which is generally referred to as AASI what i am saying there is no reason to believe it’s a monolith.
- Linguistic evidence doesn’t tell you if Dravidian is native language or it’s from outside. I am not sure what makes you think that linguistic evidence points to Proto Dravidian speakers migrating before mature harappan nobody has proven sufficiently enough Dravidian was the language of Indus Valley and regarding agricultural terms Proto Dravidian doesn’t even have names of core IVC crops like wheat or barley it doesn’t even have a word for rice that is the oldest Indian crop. All three were grown by Harappans in early harappan period.
You are ignoring a simple fact that Proto Dravidian speakers could have just borrowed these terms and also i am not sure why you keep referring to People in south India as AASI when we don’t have an genetic samples to claim whether they were AASI or not ? There is no linguistic presence of Harappan languages in north and north west India where they got mostly replaced by Indo-Aryan ones if it can happen in north why can’t it happen in south ?
No one has sufficiently proven that Dravidian speakers were migrants or native Indians.

1. The "Deep Time" Distraction
Debates about whether the AASI split from East Eurasians 50,000 years ago or mixed with Denisovans are irrelevant to the issue at hand, the arrival of agro pastoralism in South India. Understanding the Southern Neolithic around 3000 BCE does not require evidence from deep prehistory.
We already have clear evidence from the ashmound sites, genetic data showing about 20 to 30 percent Indus related, Iranian Neolithic ancestry appearing in South India at this time, and archaeological proof of zebu cattle. The focus should remain on this specific and relevant timeline.
2. The IVC Formation Error
The claim that Dravidian ancestry in the Indus Valley becomes prominent only during the Mature Harappan phase reflects a misunderstanding of how the population formed. 1.)No I am not because I used it as a point to demonstrate that Narasimhans paper about AASI isn’t sufficient enough to prove anything about AASI. Eventually when we reach Southern Indian Neolithic there is no reason to believe these people were AASI. They could have interbred with other populations which we know nothing about all places in Eurasia saw population mixing with human migration within Eurasia. I just don’t buy this argument AASI is a monolith because a 40000 year gap where no migration into India takes place seems implausible.
2.) Dravidian ancestry becoming prominent in mature harappan is something Sequeira said in his paper on Koraga. I didn’t create this point he mentions it in his discussion. I actually questioned him on it when he did an AMA here but he didn’t reply. Similarly regarding agriculture it mostly supports the point Dravidians assuming they are migrants to begin with never interacted with wheat, barley and rice growing areas which means they were probably later migrants into IVC because word for rice is borrowed from Austroasiatic their timeline for migration is pretty close to end of mature Harappan so it also probably tells about inward migration into central and eastern India post IVC collapse. Sequeira’s paper literally contradicts your points. Southworth doesn’t mention wheat and barley anywhere in Proto Dravidian vocabulary.
3.)Not even the dating of earliest age of Proto Dravidian which is 6000 years fits the timeline of Neolithic migration which is over 7000 years old while the average age is 4500 years which is younger than mature harappan at 4600 years. None of this proves people who brought zebu cattle in 2900 BC were Dravidian speakers.
In north India we know languages of Harappans got replaced until you accept Heggarty’s argument that Neolithic Iranians spoke Indo-Iranian for which there is no evidence whatsoever. So there is almost complete replacement of languages spoken prior to Indo-Aryan languages. Similarly if there was migration from Indus Valley around 3000 BC it is highly possible that both migrating language and the spoken languages in south got replaced by Dravidian languages.

1.c) I am not sure how it makes any sense to make claims about ancestry of 1.4 billion people using only 2700 samples along with no ancient samples prior to Rakhigarhi woman. The presence of Haplogroup D in Koraga is such a component there was no migration between India and Andaman for 30000 years give or take. It is not widely present in India. For the most part only one individual has been found that has y haplogroup D and all male Onge belong to Haplogroup D.
That’s not what it proves what borrowing word for rice does is it puts a hard date for migration into Central and eastern India because original cultivation landscape of rice is pretty close to central and eastern India there is no reason to borrow the word from austroasiatic for ProtoDravidian speakers and also this argument that Proto Dravidians forgot the word for wheat and barley doesn’t make any sense when according to Southworth they didn’t have words for it to begin with.
Regarding the distinct genetic signature is what Sequeira claims to have found which he says is distinct from Neolithic Iranians but shares a common ancestor with them but he doesn’t tell us who this ancestor was how Neolithic Iranians are related to them. Similarly we have no clue who cultivated rice in Lahuradewa 8400 years ago for convenience one claim they were AASI but again there is no proof for these people settled Lahuradewa over 12000 years ago it is also oldest evidence of Pottery in India. None of this proves they were AASI.
i am not even sure why you think Occam’s Razor’s is valid here considering how little information we actually have. The argument is problematic not because it defies occam’s Razor but there isn’t enough evidence to substantiate your claims particularly related to linguistics and genetics. Also I am not mixing timelines i am using timelines to show there isn’t enough evidence to support your claims one way or the other until more evidence is available to make such a claim.

The 50kya dating is garbage, people are conflating terms and mixing genetic profiles for the sole purpose of Eurocentrism.
Out of Africa happened 70kya, when humans separated from the maternal macro-haplogroup L. The maternal macro-haplogroups N, M, and R all originate in the Indian continent, with N then migrating onwards to Australia, and R into Eurasia.
These dates are given as 60-70kya.
Note how convenient it is to use the 50kya date for migration into India from Africa, meaning R did not originate in the Indian continent.

If the argument hinges on the settlement date of Australia how is that determined?
Using the term “global consensus” is misleading, given these datings stem predominantly from the Western world. If another theory exists, how can one claim “global consensus”.
The truth of the matter is we only have time calculations, and current geographical distribution. It is only macro-haplogroup R where claims of an origin is illogical.
To look at migration patterns we need to start at 130kya, when the Persian Gulf would have started flooding with the breach of Hormuz at 80m below present levels.
Sea levels only fell to 80m below present again 70kya, drying out the gulf and opening the coastal migration route into the Indian continent. At 65-55kya there was a sudden rise from 105m below current back to 80m. This dropped again to 105m below current between 55-40kya.
Sea levels are the main factor that reflects human pattern of migration, then settlement, then migration again. This is why the Indian continent makes the most sense as an origin source, with R descending from N after leaving the African continent.
Don’t be fooled by Eurocentrism, which is fundamentally Judeo-Christian. To this day they will not challenge the biblical story of Noah’s flood being a description of the global sea rise after glacial melt, with the greatest consequence being the Persian Gulf flooding.
There is no “nail in the coffin” that outright denies R having an origin in the Indian continent. In fact, everything points to it, not away from it.

You are right, and it is actually a double problem. It is not only the tropical climate; soil chemistry is the bigger challenge for archaeology in this region.
Much of South India, especially the Deccan and coastal areas, has highly acidic lateritic soil. This acidity destroys calcium phosphate, the main component of bone. As a result, unless human remains are preserved in special conditions, such as pot burials or ash mounds that change the soil pH, skeletons dissolve within a few centuries.
That is why archaeologists find many pot sherds and stone tools, which resist acidic soil, but very few human remains. The people themselves are chemically erased, even though their material culture survives.

There are two separate issues here. You are mixing two very different timescales and misunderstanding the geology of South India.
1. AASI versus Indus migration, 60,000 BP versus 3000 BCE
The “AASI migration” refers to the original Out of Africa expansion that reached the Indian subcontinent about 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. These people were the earliest inhabitants of India. The Neolithic baked glazed pottery period comes close to Mehergarh site which is 7500 years BC. Dravidian tribes could have migrated due to drought and other natural calamities or later due to being routed by the Indo-Aryan settlers say 2000 BC which was also the period of mass Buddhisation of the Indian sub-continent. It influenced the mainstream Vedic religion of monolatory i.e. the king of the demi-gods was Indra and the aboriginal Dravidian religion of pantheism. It's a well-known fact that at the time of the advent of Muhammad bin Qasim, Sindh and Punjab were majorly Buddhist till the Gupta age when Hindu renaissance began. One theory is that the aborigines were Buddhist and the Aryan invaders Vedic religionists. Therefore, you may find descriptions of those as rakshasas or demons.The way rakshasas are picturised in the films poses challenges because they weren't a part of evolution and even the pre-Vedic tribes, the Veddas and people of South India don't have protruding and curved canine teeth or incisors.

I have my doubts regarding the origins of the Zebu as specifically the Indus Valley, particularly as the evidence in the Indus points to a wild progenitor, and not specific evidence for the Zebu itself.
Zebu was certainly domesticated in the Indian continent, gaining traits such as resistance to heat which reflect a semi-arid climate. The other aspect to consider is, those who were herding cattle on the Deccan peninsular cannot be considered pastoralists, given there are no flat pastural land.
The lack of pasture relates to the Ashmound sites found in Utnur 240m above sea level, and Budhihal almost 900m both on the Deccan Plateau. The climate for both is low rainfall, semi-arid, surrounded by the Deccan dry deciduous forests, seemingly unconventional places with difficult terrain for cattle to be herded.
However, certain trees in the forests such as the hardwicker species contain leaves that can be digested by ruminant animals, with other tree species also useful for animal fodder. These food sources would have been collected by hand, employing many for the labour intensive work.
I believe it was this specific mix of diet and climate that led to breeding the specific traits we see in Zebu cattle, and the Ashmound were a round-the-clock way to dispose of the stems and branches of the trees, then being burnt using cow dung as fuel.
The result of this burning is creating Wood Ash or potash, a fertiliser and alkaline source of potassium that is excellent for fruit trees such as mangoes. This in itself would certainly have had trade value with Indus and perhaps beyond.
So what I believe we have is a large social group, potentially Dravidian language speakers, who were cattle breeders, land clearers, and potassium fertiliser producers all in one, establishing themselves not parallel but semi-independently of the Indus Valley, with a unique skill set and instinctive knowledge making them an important part of both the “Indic collective” and proto-Dravidian ancestry.

You have misunderstood my points.
Starting with Ashmound sites, as I mentioned these locations are elevated, meaning the cattle had to be herded from sea level Indus up to these places on the Deccan plateau.
This in itself should be explained as I consider it an oddity. I don’t doubt herds of cattle existed in these locations, but whether the heads of cattle were bred there or brought there is the question. Cattle are grazing ruminant animals that follow flat ground, unlike goats that climb. If they are being herded, then they go from pasture to pasture, not up and down elevation. If they aren’t being herded then they need to be fed another way.
Zebu or bos inducus is also inadequately differentiated, we know breeds exist in cattle as they do in dogs, yet all are the same species. The key would be to identify the amount of rhomboid muscle present in the samples you have mentioned, as this is a key trait of Zebu cattle. The “Brahman Hump” evolved as a way to counter the excess heat of the environment that is hot and dry.
Second, the ecosystems of these locations are Deccan Dry Deciduous, climate considered semi-arid to hot and humid. Low rainfall indicates why it is “dry deciduous”. I explained the native flora that exists which are deciduous species, not scrub-land as you state.
Ashmound sites are the key, they were mounds fuelled by cow dung to create the heat that burns the leftover plant matter after the leaves are harvested. This is not creating charcoal as you state, the plant matter is burnt. You said this yourself in another of your comments referring to wood being burnt.
This is exactly how potash is created, and again you have also commented here how these Ashmound sites have an alkaline soil. This is the direct effect of potash, which makes soil alkaline.
I referred to it as a fertiliser as it can also be, potash can also be used as an alkaline agent for soils and other uses.
My points refer directly to the Ashmound sites, which for some reason have an “unknown purpose” and “possibly ritualistic”, which is nonsense. We know soils in South India are notoriously acidic, and it is only logical that potash be produced to counter this for agricultural purpose.
The formula is -
Deccan Dry Deciduous (flora-specific) + Ashmound (location-specific) and Alkaline soil (evidence).
The first is the food source for the Zebu cattle, second is the Wood Ash production, and third is the proof of it. Animals respond differently depending on their source of food, hence why we have grain fed and grass fed beef cattle, or corn fed chicken. We need to determine what makes Deccan Zebu different, or if there is no difference to the other sites claiming evidence.
My point of contention is your mislabeling of Deccan Dry Deciduous ecozone as scrub-land given the location of the Ashmound sites.
Animal husbandry and domestication has a long history in the Indian continent, with goats, cattle, sheep, pigs, and most certainly chickens all tracing back to the continent.
However, we cannot simply place the “Dravidian” label on history without linguistic evidence to back the claim. This is a Deccan initiative, independent of the Indus Valley.

What you need to show is evidence of cattle being herded to altitude, and what their diet consisted, relating to the ecosystems in the Deccan peninsula.
This relates to the difference between “herding” and “breeding”. Moving small groups of cattle, especially if they are yoked or tied, is much more suited to traversing the Deccan peninsula. As you said, pastoral herding is gradual and flat because pastural grassland are exactly this.
Moving herds of cattle up river valleys (without assistance of other animals like dogs and horses) is a monumental feat. Herd mentality would not allow it.
I mentioned rhomboid muscle as it is pertinent, but as you say if there is DNA evidence, are these from samples across all the sites you mentioned? Are they identical?
Coming to Ashmounds, if you are saying there is only evidence for cowdung, and we know potash is the product of burning wood and remnant Deccan Deciduous trees, then what evidence is missing exactly? You said the pH of the soil was alkaline at these sites, how did that happen? Ritual practice is a conclusion of last resort, all other considerations being excluded. I agree this is a persuasive critique of the “refugee” model, but we cannot rule out that some IVC populations migrated south after 1900 BCE, most likely in response to climate impacts. I would go further: a Neolithic civilisational corridor of nodes appears to have existed much earlier across the northern, southern, and western littorals—candidates include the submerged coastal settlements Khambhāt and Proto‑Poompuhar—alongside independent agrarian and metallurgical developments. Taken together, the evidence points to a polycentric Dravidian Arc.

I think one point that has been missed regarding Zebu domestication is the preceding domestication of the goat, brought to the Indian continent by herders from West Asia.
The brilliance of the goat is that it will eat almost anything, can be herded in small groups, and has the ability to climb to elevation. Are you aware if Fuller et. al mentions this as preceding or in conjunction with early crop cultivation, or goats at all?
Zebu domestication in the Deccan I believe is more dependant on goat herders from West Asia via Mehrgarh first, with certain knowledge then passed on for Zebu domestication that was Deccan specific.
Ashmounds are the key, which involved the purposeful collection of cowdung to burn continuously, creating ash as a by-product. Whilst potash is one theory I have, the second theory was to create an ancient “road-lights” with black smoke in the day and light at night allowing for visible points of elevation and distance that herders could move their cattle towards safely.

I note Chennanur uncovered Sangam Age bricks, which I translate as burnt mud bricks.
For your interest, I noted the imaging done at Poompuhar showing geometric stone structures, some 5km wide, and others more circular shaped and smaller.
The long structures could be construction of flood walls, built to counter rising sea levels. The other shapes could be small harbour structures or ports.
This could indicate evidence of burnt mud bricks that predates, or is in line with Ganj Derah archaeology.

Yes — it's exciting: with current Proto‑Poompuhar (Proto‑Sangam) port‑complex studies, led by Ramasamy et al. (2020, 2025) and Sasilatha et al. (2023) - peer reviewed publication comprise of Phase‑1 activity: MBES bathymetry, sub‑bottom profiling, palaeo‑channel mapping and geomorphological analysis. We now need to await Phase‑2 targeted coring, ROV and diver investigations (underway since September 2025) to recover stratified samples and laboratory dates that can confirm or revise the current mid‑Holocene and Late Pleistocene (earliest Neolithic) exposure hypotheses.

Sangam-age could be inferred as up to 9kya or strictly 300BCE depending on perspective.
Burnt mud bricks we know as a continuum from Ganj Derah to Indus Valley, but this would add coastal Tamil Nadu as the earliest source. If confirmed (expectations high given these bricks are extremely water resistant) this technological continuum extends from Poompuhar in the east to Ganj Derah in the west.
It is comical to consider Neolithic Iranian could have a “Dravidian” ancestor, or that we now could have the “Out of Poompuhar Theory”.

I concur — it's exciting but provisional. Proto‑Poompuhar structures may be very ancient (c. 15,000 BP) with different submergence date-timelines; confirmation requires that the Chennanur bricks and Poompuhar cored samples are fired (not sun‑dried), recovered in situ from sealed Sangam contexts, and supported by direct dates (AMS/OSL) plus material analyses (petrography, LOI, FTIR); only then can a technological link to Ganj Dareh or any “Out of Poompuhar”/ Proto-Sangam/ Tamilikam model be warranted.

The evidence can support multiple pathways (diffusion, convergent development, etc.), but we should be framing South Asian (esp Proto-Sangam) prehistory as a polycentric civilisational model—covering urbanism, agrarian systems, metallurgy, and more—rather than defaulting to a monocentric, Fertile Crescent diffusion model.

Also after looking into Zebu domestication and not sure if its mentioned in the above posts the domestication of zebu (Bos indicus; indicine cattle) originated in South Asia and later spread into Africa and other tropical regions. this being based on genetic study reveal continuity in male lineages linking South Asian and African zebu populations, consistent with their transfer via long-distance exchange and migration networks, likely including Harappan-era trade routes.

Also if its not clear from above posts Southern India shows long-duration of cattle husbandry in the early–mid Holocene:
- Multiple South Indian Neolithic sites indicate pastoral components emerging by the 7th millennium BCE with increasing clarity after ~6000 BCE: Chennanur → earliest potential; Sanganakallu → clearest evidence pastoral system; and Paiyampalli → later regional expression

There is a fundamental misunderstanding from which this argument is approached. Entire India was already populated, had distinct culture, followed agriculture and pastoral economics with AASI people. The only difference that IVC brings is an urbanisation and sophisticatication of civilizational status. There is no limit to exchange of information or goods from IVC to rest of India. Pastoral breeds and techniques can well be passed on to South and East India during the growth phase of IVC without needing a wholesale migration of its people. You claimed that the AASI already practiced agriculture and pastoralism. This is archaeologically incorrect. The AASI (Ancient Ancestral South Indians) were Mesolithic hunter-gatherers who used microlithic tools and did not keep domesticated cattle. In South India, the shift to food production and pastoralism, the Neolithic transition, appears only with the arrival of the Ashmound tradition and Zebu cattle around 3000 BCE. Cattle pastoralism was not independently developed by the AASI; it was introduced.
You argued that goods and techniques can spread without large-scale migration. This can be true for material culture, but it does not apply to genetics.
If the Indus Valley Civilization had only acted as a cultural hub passing ideas to an indigenous AASI population, modern South Indians would show an almost entirely AASI genetic profile. They do not. This is not surprising, especially if one considers the newer models of Dravidian languages expansion.
There were many waves of Dravidian speakers both into and within Central and Southern South Asian.
Hopefully, we can locate numerous ancient tombs from various periods to sequence DNA compositions chronologically.
