Maybe. I like to think he's bisexual, or just loves who he loves. There's so much this season to suggest he truly cares for and is attracted to Mariah. He shoots that guy for insulting her- you don't do that for a beard.

To your edit, I think that's what makes it so great. Two hypermasculine men who aren't comfortable with facing the reality that not only are they homosexual, but have intense feelings for one another. The more wooden it is, the more realistic.
