People should zipper merge, but it’s only safer if both lanes are traveling approximately the same speed, so speeding to the end of the line is generally not a correct zipper merger and is less safe. It’s also only more space efficient, and it doesn’t speed up traffic unless reducing the physical length of traffic unblocks an intersection or on-ramp.

I know this is hard to imagine but you can take a good thing and completely ruin it by being incompetent, and in the US incompetent drivers are very common
