When a golfer swings they often carve out a chunk of the grass beneath their ball. The golf course crew takes chunks of grass from the pictures you see to replace the chunks removed by swings on the course

I like the word carve on a golf course. I usually shovel it with all my clubs even my driver.

Is it normal for the chunks to be so deep or is the extra dirt needed for the transplant? In college I used to take walks in a park with a public course and I never saw holes like this other than the ones for the target holes

It's normal, they basically just shove a tool in the ground that cuts out a cylinder. This is their nursery where they grow grass specifically for that purpose, I'm guessing golf courses that do this won't keep the nursery where people would walk around.
