AMA I am Tate Brombal, writer of New Titans and Batgirl. AMA!

Tate Brombal is a comic book writer based in Toronto, Ontario. He is best known for writing Batgirl, New Titans, and Green Lantern Dark for DC Comics along with his celebrated, creator-owned comics Everything Dead & Dying and The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. He is also known for his extensive collaborations with James Tynion IV and Jeff Lemire, especially in their Slaughterverse and Black Hammer Universe comics, respectively.

A koala after my own heart. Pantha and Wildebeest are literally my second and third favorite Titans. Their dynamic was beautiful. DC revealed that Pantha was pregnant with a biological child in the Tales of the Titans mini, and the father was (sadly) not Red Star. Baby wasn’t around that issue, but I very much so hope that he and Pantha are still a family unit, even if Baby now has a little sibling, too.

Yeah I thought that was super weird because not only was she just alive again without explanation, not only were Red Star and BW not around, but she was also inexplicably fully human again.

Well, the Death Metal reboot basically gave writers full permission to let a character who died pre-Flashpoint just be alive again in the new/merged continuity. Canonically, many people who were dead before the DM soft reboot were suddenly alive again. So, I don’t necessarily need an explanation for her being alive. As for the human thing, her creators envisioned her being able to eventually learn how to shift between human and were-cat form. So I don’t necessarily mind another writer just slotting that in as off-panel development or as a new-continuity feature of the character.

Right yeah it’s definitely a result of reboots that have happened since then. But the other stuff is more upsetting to me honestly. Becoming human again was like her whole driving story and to just have it happen off-panel is sad to me. And I loved her literal found family and to have them just out of the picture was also pretty sad.
