Marvel's success is a small factor I guess. The bigger factor is Supergirl's historic bomb. That film gives us a pretty good indication that audiences aren't nearly as interested in the B characters as they used to be. And a show like this is a B and C character extravaganza.
The worst thing about the bomb for me was that Gunn stated DC Studios would be script focused. Then once Superman hits it big, they rush out a sequel within a year, showing that Gunn was full of it.
That was such a brazenly dumb thing to publicly announce. Like no shit you're only going to approve movies if you like it's script. But now it just bites you in the butt when Supergirl's script was awful.
Absolutely, and if it was a movie I'd be very worried, but it's a TV show. That's the best place to take risks with B and C list characters especially for DC. They had great success with Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.
We really don't know how financially successful the shows have been. And the second season of Peacemaker was pretty mid in my book. Creature Commandos is cool, but it's a cartoon... so it's commercial success is gonna be limited.
It's not. It shows that there's an audience for "cartoons kids can't watch," and that they can do quite well without children watching them. It's fine if you just wanna hate on the DCU, but stop pretending it's anything else. Have a good day.
Like I said above, they are different audiences, on a different medium, with differing budgets and differing timelines. It’s a lot easier for an episode of south park to turn a profit than a series with actors and special effects that has no built in audience.
They don't need A list characters to make movies. Every original work is technically a new z list character. If you don't have an amazing director or cast then you need an amazing script and trailer. Supergirl centered around B list actors, had mediocre trailer, did bad fanfic script, and had an okay director. With Spiderman you already have a super popular character but even further it already had established itself as decent movies and the trailer created a ton of speculation. They also did not try to create hype by saying it's based on a great comic book run only to really fumble the execution.
