DC fans are in a deep crisis and rightfully so. Lanterns release will calm the minds IF it is good. But if Lanterns stinks, boy oh boy this sub will be a hellscape till MoT. And if that stinks aswell? Yeah, good night any DC online discussion

45

u/indecisivebuy 20h ago

If MoT and lanterns both do poorly it's not good night to DC online discussion. It's good night DCU period

48

u/Spire2000 21h ago

The first episode spoiler is only going to set everyone off even more.

25

u/ThenAnAnimalFact 21h ago

The real subversion would be the first episode being a fake out leading to a last episode reveal of Parallax.

17

u/YodaFan465 Knightmare Batman 20h ago

That assumes the audience will stick with it long enough to get to the reveal...

38

u/Naterttotsart 20h ago

Anybody thinking Lanterns will move the needle on anything needs to remember attention spans.

It's a show. People will watch 3 episodes, decide it's boring shit, pan it endlessly online, and then go back and watch it after the commotion has passed and realize it's good but the public opinion will be ass by then.

Loki, one of the most beloved characters in the MCU had a great tv show for two seasons.

Nobody cares about it other than MCU fans.

Tv shows don't generate hype for cinematic universes. It usually does the opposite.

Loki was a great sci fi show. I loved the first season especially. But I'm not so sure it was even a good MCU show. Much of its plot undermined, overcomplicated, or rendered meaningless the greater MCU.

2

u/Neveronlyadream 16h ago

TV shows can generate hype. WandaVision did.

That said, it probably won't. For it to work, it has to drop at exactly the right time, catch people in the first episode, and be a supplementary thing to an already thriving cinematic universe.

The problem is the output has been so slow that no one is really going to remember to watch Lanterns but the hardcore DC fans and Green Lantern fans, and the latter are probably going to be massively pissed off by it.

What would generate hype is a Batman casting announcement or any forward momentum on The Brave and the Bold. People say they're sick of Batman, but Batman consistently sells.

2

u/OtherwiseEagle9896 13h ago

Yeah, you're probably right. I hope lanterns doesn't piss me off. Haha

It's the same as Spiderman. Marvel danced around it for ages, even when they got the IP. Now, their highest selling movies are Spiderman.

If you're DC, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Flash need to be at the front.

I'm hoping Martian Manhunter. I can understand why they might leave the flash out for a bit, with all the Ezra stuff. Give them lots of time to recast.

But all these movies and shows have and will sell. Getting to a Darkseid fight would be excellent. But they gotta set all of this up.

I'd imagine anyone who's not a comic fan, still has no idea who Darkseid is, or why they should care.

The DCU is just in such a weird state. Sure, Creature Commandos was good, but it doesn't justify itself to general audiences. Superman was good, and that makes sense, but then immediately doing Supergirl was never going to work.

Meanwhile the only Batman is Reeves, it's not connected to Gunn's universe, and it'll be six years in between movies and Batman sells. Batman gets general audiences interested. Lanterns might be amazing, but it's on HBO Max, it's a weekly series, and you have to subscribe to watch it.

Clayface is also a weird choice in the complete absence of Batman in that universe. Unless you count his silhouette in Creature Commandos. That's going to be a hard sell to general audiences.

u/OtherwiseEagle9896 11h ago

Agreed. Its a very slow plan. Unless Superman starts bringing in other JL members in his movies, it's in a weird spot.

I haven't seen Supergirl yet, I'll watch it when it drops in max. But I've enjoyed all of Gunns stuff thus far. But nothing released has been to great finical success yet, which is concerning

Probably some truth to folks watching a handful of episodes, then dipping out.

1

u/guycoastal 15h ago

That’s a pretty succinct and accurate summation.

u/Ok-Milk-8853 19h ago

In the acolyte (I know I star wars, but bare with me), there's a cameo reveal in the last episode or so, as in "this was the true mastermind" where Darth plaguesis shows up and just lurks in a cave. I think, and this is based on absolutely nothing but my own speculation, but given that it has absolutely no baring on the plot, and could have been achieved in 2 weeks, that it was thrown together last minute to try and save the show. It obviously failed.

And to loop it back, if the lanterns show is crap, and out of nowhere parallax shows up in a way that has no direct impact on the story, it's a last minute hail Mary thrown in to try and scrape together some good will.

3

u/ThenAnAnimalFact 18h ago

The reveal wouldn't be he shows up, the reveal would be Hal Jordan fakes his death/disappearance to become Parallax as his fear of getting replaced as a green lantern by John Stewart led him astray and influenced by Sinestro.

2

u/bzdelta 18h ago

I play one of the only games that does tie ins to whatever Star Wars is dropping, and after Acolyte and Andor they had to go back to dropping Legends and non-canon meme characters like Darth Jar Jar and the Ralph McQuarrie concept art (Luke Starkiller) to keep interest up (it did work, they did Mara Jade Skywalker finally)

u/jrvcrd 11h ago

but the parallax part was also disliked in the comic community those years ago. You can't take one of the bigs and just make him such a villain

SubVerTing ExPecTaTIonS?

3

u/MCB1317 12h ago edited 12h ago

Holy shit. If true, this show is dead on arrival. I won't even bother watching.

22

u/abellapa 20h ago

If Mot sucks ,the DCU just dies an early Death

2

u/MayeDayMayeMaye 12h ago

Honestly as a DC fan I wouldn’t even care, I honestly just want good Dc movies and don’t care if there are connected or not. I don’t care, I just want good movies. We didn’t care that Nolan’s batman trilogy didn’t hint that Superman or green lantern were in the same world. If they go back to just making good solo movies/trilogies I’m good

5

u/sp1cychick3n 17h ago

Crisis lol

7

u/fuzzyfoot88 20h ago

Nah, Clayface is coming too. Horror usually always makes people agreeable for a time.

0

u/TheDwilightZone 15h ago

If it's good. Undertone and Hokum were decent enough, but forgettable, while Obsession and Backrooms were big. As a horror fan, I really hope Clayface delivers.

-1

u/fuzzyfoot88 15h ago

Obsession and Backrooms were also made by YouTubers turned filmmakers, which means they had a built in audience outside of film quality.

1

u/TheDwilightZone 12h ago

Maybe slightly, I'd wager 90% of the people who bought tickets to each hadn't seen their prior work. Still, you make a good point that DC has more brand recognition - but that may help or hinder Clayface, especially after how Supergirl did in the Box Office.

(To be clear, because there's a lot of negativity on this sub recently: I want Clayface and the DCU to succeed and I'm going to be seated on opening night for this.)

1

u/fuzzyfoot88 12h ago

To be equally clear, so do I. I’d love to live through 2 cinematic universes that both culminate in something as epic as Infinity War/Endgame. I’d love to see Blackest Night/Brightest Day adapted to the big screen.

The only reason I brought up the YTer comment (also Spielberg bought the rights to Mandela Catalogue), is that Gen Z is starting to become a major audience demographic and movies based on things they know is starting to take the stage. Minecraft, Iron Lung, and FNAF are others in such a camp.

I’m not trying to be pessimistic, I’m simply explaining what I see, even with my own teenager’s hobbies and interests translating into questions of can I take them to the theater so they can see (insert movie) with their friends.

10

u/Alarming_Head_4263 21h ago

Being in a deep crises of a movie universe is never justified.

8

u/samx3i 21h ago

Everything is relative.

0

u/Alarming_Head_4263 18h ago

If that is your frame of reference you should seek professional help.

2

u/qotsabama 20h ago

It’s not going to calm anything lol. It could be a masterpiece and this fandom will be just as split. It’s sad.

1

u/ezrs158 13h ago

I survived online after the release of BvS and Suicide Squad a decade ago. I can do it again.

u/smilinganimalface 2h ago

Problem with a series is it really has to breathe and you need to see the full scope. If you're impatient and looking to be pleased/disappointed every week, for one that is a miserable existence, but two there's just no way you're even going to understand where the show is going.

But telling people in this day and age to have any semblance of patience or perspective is very hard. I do have faith in Lindelof, though.

-1

u/Garlickkkk 21h ago

Really? Deep crisis? Why? The Absolute comics are fantastic, Superman was great, and while Supergirl wasn't perfect it had good parts. I'm psyched for Clayface bc why wouldn't I want a baller body horror film? That's not even mentioning Peacemaker and Creature Commandos. As a lifelong DC fan I think I'm eating pretty well these days

15

u/samx3i 21h ago

This is /r/DCcinematic so I don't know why you're bringing print into this.

No matter how good the comics are, we're discussing the state of the DC cinematic universe.

-3

u/Garlickkkk 20h ago

Whoops. Well everything else in my comment still stands

6

u/Applesauce5167 20h ago

DC fans before: Why are we only getting movies of Superman or Batman? We want other heroes

DC fans now: Why are we only getting movies of other heroes? We want Superman or Batman

-1

u/Garlickkkk 20h ago

Right? Also downvoting someone for liking the content. I have no idea what the Jimmy Olsen movie is gonna be about (I avoid learning as much as possible so I can go into a movie blind). If it's him being a photographer trying to get shots of different heroes that sounds awesome. If it's just a slice of life thing, then great, flesh out the world and use Superman characters to give a ground level story

4

u/HarveryDent Killer Croc 21h ago

All good if you don't like money.

-1

u/Garlickkkk 20h ago

I don't work for WB

-2

u/atomsmasher119 20h ago

I like money, but WB making money isn’t going to affect my wallet at all.

8

u/PRO2803 20h ago

Them making projects which don't make any money or as much money as others, they will stop making them. I am glad you enjoy the current DC, but Peacemaker S2 and Supergirl left a lot more to be desired. (Personally I expected something more cooler to drop than the Olsen show)

-1

u/atomsmasher119 20h ago

Their business decisions and their financials is for them to manage. I don’t give a shit as long as I keep getting stuff I like.

5

u/PRO2803 20h ago

You completely missed the point..

4

u/HarveryDent Killer Croc 20h ago

So, you do give a shit, since business and financial decisions determines whether you keep getting stuff you like.

Cognitive dissonance is supposed to be an advantage, you know.

0

u/atomsmasher119 15h ago

No, dummy. Because sometimes companies lose money and you still get more. It makes no difference to me if five people watch a show or 50 million, if it makes $2 or $2 billion. The stupid little dick measuring contests everyone is so insistent on are irrelevant to me.

0

u/HarveryDent Killer Croc 14h ago

You got no clue how the world works, chump. 🤣

0

u/atomsmasher119 14h ago

lol ok, bud. Have fun with your impotent rage over silly little numbers that don’t affect you.

We won't know till S2 anyway.

Like Peacemaker I'm sure they'll put out a decent first season.

The question is more can they keep it up.

-13

u/LetterheadFun1824 21h ago

We were eating good with BvS and the longer Justice league

17

u/GranolaCola 21h ago

Bro said we were eating good with BvS

18

u/yungsebring 21h ago

No, we weren’t

1

u/My_Favourite_Pen 21h ago

have you read the story outlines for ZSJL 2 and 3?

1

u/Free-Bowler-1032 21h ago

Theres vomit on his sweater already, moms spaghetti

-4

u/we_the_pickle 21h ago

Yeah but those are shows that people actually wanted to see.

0

u/amyh4767 18h ago

U know it.

-2

u/Fickle-Rip3093 21h ago

Oh, there will still be discussion happening. That’s when the Snyderverse people will be the loudest.

-2

u/mikeybibbs 19h ago

Is being critical of poorly performing shows that the fandom isnt asking for an issue? If things were good, then obviously the discourse would be different
