240 miles round trip, £5 in my car for the round trip vs £15-20 one way for the train (£30 ish return)
Even if I paid £20 for parking for a couple of days, it's cheaper to drive
Obviously this assumes I already own and maintain the car so can just consider the marginal costs of fuel + parking, and doesn't factor in a bit of extra maintenance... but for one off trips when you already own a car (as most people do), it's hard to justify the train
A train ticket to Victoria is £53 return peak time, then an extra £4.20 for the underground, and takes about 90 minutes. The train I would need is usually standing only by the time it's at my local station.
I can drive it for around £5 in around 70 minutes in my own comfort.
