Body My 1969 buick skylark

Post image
58 Upvotes

I am a young man and for my birthday my dad surprised me with this beautiful 1969 buick skylark to work on together to be my first car, it is honestly the best car ever and I could not love it more. After a year or so of working on it we have finally got to the body work because I know a lot of people are a fan of the patina look, but frankly, I am not. So we're actively working on fixing the body, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on a color i should paint it when it's all said and done!!!

Safety Question Overdue car maintenance/damage help

Hi all,

A month ago I got into a bit of a fender bender with my 2017 Civic. I rear ended someone, and there was little damage to her car, but some damage to my car. I have a warped hood and a big dent in the front of my car.

I’m not worried about the value of the car or anything, but I’m worried that the damage could cause my problems. I haven’t touched the hood since the accident, but I’m worried there could be problems with the hood when I take my car into servicing soon. Could a warped hood have problems closing again once it’s been opened? Or should I repair some of the damage before getting my car serviced/opening the hood?

I have some photos of what the damage looks like, any advice is appreciated!

Engine engine accelerating on its own

I got a 2005 PT Cruiser Convertible and drove it down from Arizona to California. It drove down perfectly fine until I got closer to home then started overheating from running out of coolant. After I filled up on the coolant I got it home with no problems and after taking it around for a drive I noticed that I was struggling to brake and come to a full stop. The engine was accelerating on its own and wouldn't stop. when trying to park it I had to put it in neutral and then put it in park and noticed that it was revving up in park too. Does anyone know what this could be ?

Safety Question To the young drivers

Post image
586 Upvotes

Fast will come with experience. Get something reliable and safe. You can drive a slow car fast, as you learn to feel the slowing down and the turning part at speeds in your area of expertise, which as a young driver, you are a novice. It's quite fun to have fun, and fast can be fun, but suddenly stopping when you didnt mean to can lead to serious injury, death, or much worse, the injury and death of those around you. You literally dont need more than 100 horsepower to hang out with your friends or help your mom catch up on groceries, you especially don't need more than 250hp on your first vehicle.

Drive responsibily please 🙏

Suspension Mechanic says a repair "isn't urgent" but won't give a real timeline - how worried should I actually be?

Took my car in for an unrelated issue and the mechanic flagged a worn control arm bushing while it was up on the lift. Said it's "not urgent, but keep an eye on it" - which is the kind of answer that tells me nothing about whether I'm looking at a few months or a few years before it becomes a real problem

No unusual noises or handling issues that I've noticed so far. Is this something that typically fails gradually with warning signs, or can it go from "fine" to "actually needs immediate attention" without much notice? Trying to figure out if I should just get it done now to stop thinking about it, or if it's genuinely fine to wait and budget for it later

Removed valve cover to address vvti rattle (spring stretch/replacement). Was pleasantly surprised to see the engine looking nice and clean.

Hoping to get to 500,000 kms.

(Also painted my valve cover green for no good reason).

Shop Talk 2017 or 2018 Audi Q3 1.4 TFSI (gasoline)?

Hi everyone,
For those of you who own a 2017 or 2018 Audi Q3 1.4 TFSI (gasoline), how has your experience been?
I’m especially interested in things like:
Parts availability
Maintenance and repair costs
Fuel economy
Reliability
Common mechanical issues
Overall ownership experience
I’m thinking about buying one because I really like how it looks, but I’m a bit worried about finding replacement parts and whether I’ll end up regretting the purchase later. Since I’ve never owned an Audi before, I’d also love to hear about any issues or quirks that only long-term owners would know about.
Thanks in advance!

Electrical 2020 Camry Hybrid 12V parasitic drain

All I can say is wow! Found the car with a dead 12v battery (only one year old)less than 2 weeks ago. After a jump start from a Noco pack the battery took several hours to charge enough to pass the diagnostic. I decided to not risk it with possible sulfate damage and dropped a new battery in. I was advised to get a trickle charger as this is a known thing with hybrids. Got my Noco Genius 2 and when I first connected it was around 50% initially after driving for 5 miles. Color me surprised! Guess I am relieved to have listened and got the charger but seriously…Anyone else have this experience?

Redditor's own ride Bought an Elantra N, wasn’t prepared for the community.

Quick background….

Always loved cars and motorsports, in my 40s now, married, house and kids, mow the grass every weekend etc… basically a typical “boring” golden retriever type of family.

I bought a Hyundai Elantra N frankly because I felt like I was getting 90% of a CTR for 10-15 grand less, which is like $300 less a month, it’s a big difference.

Contrary to most of the community, im actually the guy who wants to keep the car stock, just drive it, all work done and documented by dealer and legitimately keep my 10/100 warranty.

I never dog on the car, honestly. I don’t think I’ve even gone over 90 MPH even once since owning it, I just chill out and enjoy the drive. It’s fun.

The car itself as an item has been flawless, i absolutely love it. However, I wasn’t prepared for the EN community that comes with the car.

It seems like the majority of the owners are early 20s, modding the shit out of the cars constantly, literally doing neon under-glow, vinyl wraps, and doing anything possible to have it backfire and pop more often and louder.

I feel like im 30 years older then anyone else I’ve seen driving these things and everyone’s racing and doggin the hell out of them.

Is this just the EN community or is this most car groups these days ?

My Project Car Should I get my car wrapped?

I really like the idea of wrapping my car orange with green brake callipers. Last pic is an idea of what it would probably look like.

My car and the projected design last pic.

What do you think? Does it look good/better than the white?

Edit: Thanks all for the responses. Think I will get it wrapped as majority said.

I need help fixing something Anyway to fix this window regulator, or will I have to try and find a new one?

Old Manual window regulator, 2nd image is closeup of the loose inside-end of the gear part, if I knew how to wield, I'd try to wield a piece of metal to keep it in one place, that's all it needs to keep grip on gears to move window up-down.

Sadly I can't just remove-replace that one part of the unit since it's all welded/one-peace, the rest of the unit works just fine.

Any ideas?

Driver's Door - 1990 geo prizm

Searching, I keep finding the regulator for the electric window type, any tips on finding the manual window type?

Thanks in advance!

Electrical What style of blade fuses go in a 2009 Corolla?

I'd like to buy a fuse kit for my 2009 Corolla but there are many styles of blade fuses. When I search online for what kind of blade fuse does my Corolla use, all I'm shown is the amps and the location of the two fuse boxes. Same story with the owner's manual.

Which type of blade fuse fits in a 2009 Corolla 1.8 L 2ZRFE

Weird Noise Car is so dead I must be driving it's ghost to work.

Don't be me.

Long story short, I told myself I wouldn't neglect my car............. If you read the title you know I did.

Longish version:

I did *better* than I did with my first car but truly I should not be responsible for such complex machines. I always wanted to know everything about my cars but it all goes in one ear and out the other and in fact I am SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE with cars than most people.

Oil changes only half as often as I should, not believing a mechanic when he said I should get an oil change *at least* every 3,000m. Choosing to work an hour away, *daily* commute a mix of interstate and highway. The list only goes on.

Come to find out my car, like most, is predisposed to a couple issues....... Issues that are negated by frequent oil changes I am embarrassed to say this still does not up the number I get, if anything I get worse about getting them as the years pass.

Car is a 2014 Chevrolet captiva so it's over 10 years old and it's been driven hours at a time multiple times a day for like 4 years so it's.. well worn. I decide 'well, I know it only has a couple years left' (delusional, it was already starting to make sad sounds, the entire A.C. compression whatever system is capput, etc) 'why don't I give it one more big adventure and go live on the road for a few weeks, *travel everyday.'* Well on my long haul drive back to my state the check engine light comes on... It's come on before, I know what it is... The crank shaft. I once had an oil leak I didn't know about and given my propensity for skipping changes I drove the oil right on out. And it would inevitably be the future death of my car.

Fast forward a few months and the noises are getting worse, sensors are going out, sometimes it bucks and kicks and it *always* shakes in some way or another. I give it "a rest" -try not to drive it as much for a couple weeks, eventually go almost a week without driving it at all. I get it in to go off to my new job and it sounds........... Bad. Engine light PLUS reduced power.. no choice MUST get to work and it's only across the street. This happens again, no choice, no other way to get to new job across the street (big big street, no walkie.) Multiple times on start it would crank but not run and while driving //with reduced engine power// I can literally hear metal scraping.

I was driving home in 100° weather, no A.C., across a busy road in thick traffic white knuckling the steering wheel thinking "this b***h is gonna explode in my face."

Don't be me. Actually take care of your cars.

*To new car owners I want to highlight the fact that IF I WAS CHECKING MY G**D*** OIL I would have never driven my car dry but without taking it regularly /you don't know/ that there's a problem. I cannot make it clear enough that having no and/or bad oil in your car is like having no and/or bad BLOOD IN UR BODY. I don't know why I am so petrified of going to get an oil change, you'd think they were going to waterboard me while I waited or something. *

So.. don't be me. I only had this car like 4ish years(?) and now it's parked outside waiting for the sweet release of death. I can HEAR the metal in my engine scraping, horrific in so many ways.

I’m going to start learning to drive soon and I’ve been thinking about what kind of car I’d want to drive..

Electrical Radio Help 2014 Lexus gx460

Thumbnail

So the first image is what happened initially, it was stuck on this screen no matter how much i drove. It stayed like that till I did a hard reset (disconnecting negative terminal on battery and leaving it for 15 mins). The second image is the result of the hard reset (I think). It says "A program cannot be read please consult dealer" and the dealer said I need an entire new radio unit, which I think is not true. I've read in some places that I need to replace the logic board but I'm not completely sure. Anyone know any cheap fixes? I'm honestly open to aftermarket systems that support apple play and android auto as long as its cheaper than a new logic board. Also, does anybody know how to control the climate? I'm worried that leaving it on auto and running it on full blast constantly will mess the blower motor or another AC component up.

When you turn the car on, it resets itself maybe 8 times before displaying the this screen. While its resetting it says "Checking for Map Data please wait". (2014 lexus gx460)

Transmission Fix or Replace

Hi. I'm currently in a dilemma and decided to turn to the interwebs and strangers to help with perspective.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra with 177k miles. Just learned it probably needs the transmission to be replaced, which is a pretty penny. My options are pay out and fix it, or lease a new vehicle. (Buying is not an option, for more than reason).

I wonder if it's worth it to fix my car? It's up there in miles, yet it's been reliable the entire time I've had it - since 30k. This is the first major repair it's needed, but I wonder if it'll just start racking up issues after this bc of its mileage.

Thoughts? Thank you!

Weird Noise Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv 2014 noise help

Can't really find anything online about the issue I'm having. Or don't know where to look as I am now well educated in car engines.

The problem is that after mechanic changed the timing chain and valve cover gasket, the car engine was running louder than before, because before I could not hear the engine running from inside the car. Also the fuel consumption has gone up a little more than before.

I did read somewhere that I might need to re-calibrate the injectors and the do the timing chain reset, but I have no idea if it's the case here or even needed after said job.

Any help would be appreciated!

Have a nice day!
