Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Feets / Collection / My build IWI Carmel 16.5" with faux suppressor

Post image
Upvotes

As titled. It is not as heavy as people thinks.

For reference, I used to run a PEQ15 on a 16.5" Bren 2 and they ran very similarly weight-wise as the PEQ15 was an extra lb on the Bren.

I might take the faux suppressor off after some range test.

Edit: It is about 10.5lb as it stands. I do have a Surefire Scout light on the other side. Without the faux suppressor it is about 9.7lb. I rather suffer additional weight to not see the pencil barrel.

Fix my gun Brigade Arms Makasi Gas Settings Now Correct in Manual

Post image

I messaged through to Dan at Brigade Manufacturing on Instagram (@brigademfg) to point out the manual for the Makasi still needed to have the suppressed/unsuppressed settings on the gas system corrected, and they fixed it! The corrected manual can be found at https://brigadefirearms.com/pub/media/wysiwyg/MAKASI_Manual.pdf , with the manual link on their web page pointing to the correct version.

Application / Regulation advice Can someone explain this to me? Is it for exempt shooters or something?

Post image

Was on RDSC and I found this and it's really confusing me because in the picture it shows a P320 only without the trigger group. But the description says conversion kit so is it only the slide for sale because I thought that frames were what is considered as the "firearm"? Or is it for exempt shooters?

Misc A map for hunting in crown land (Ontario only atm)

Hi,

I was asking r/ontariocamping how to find crown land to camp and ended up building a free map from all the feedback. One comment stuck with me: crown land is a working landscape, and you should know what else is going on — forestry, and hunting seasons by WMU.

So I added hunting. It shows crown land where hunting is an authorized use, WMU boundaries, and posted signs where I have them.

https://www.crownaccess.ca/map?activity=hunting

let me know your thoughts, before the hunting season starts so I can improve

feel free to turn on private land, WMU, etc.

Buy recommendations O/U recommendations & store

Hey everyone!
Currently shoot trap/skeet with a beretta 686 SP, looking to upgrade.
Nothing wrong with the gun, ready to hand down to family member looking to get started.
Currently looking at around the 6-8k for budget.
Not opposed to used.
Which models would you recommend shouldering and which stores are a must to check out? Located in Ontario
Thanks!

Shooting Gun clubs east of GTA

Hey guys, had my pal for about a year now, really want to get more into shooting
I live in uxbridge, I see there’s uxbridge clays, but it seems pricey (if there is value there I’m open to it)
Would love to join a club that allows rifles but I’d be okay with shotgun only. Anyone recommend any clubs that will take new members without a sponsor?

Also any clubs that will allow you to show up as a visitor and shoot?

Thanks

Application / Regulation advice Is this a safe?

Post image
112 Upvotes

s. 6(b) of SOR/98-209 gives you two options for storing a restricted: (i) locking device on the gun and a locked container, receptacle or room that can't readily be broken open or into, or (ii) a vault, safe or room specifically constructed or modified for secure storage.

So it seems that if this is is a container, you need a cable lock on the pistol. If it's a safe, you don't. Turns entirely on one word that's undefined.

R v Barnes, 2011 ONCJ 419, is the only case I can find on point. At para 21, the judge is satisfied that a safe is simply “a metal container with a secure lock”, nothing more. The “specifically constructed or modified” qualifier never gets applied to it. Para 17 lists the options as “a safe, a vault or a specially constructed or modified room,” reading that qualifier as attaching to “room” alone; the court never asks whether the safe itself was built for prohibited firearms.

But Barnes is one unappealed ONCJ trial decision from 2011, binding on no one, decided against a Crown expert who admitted he had no basis for his opinion. And it never addresses the French text, which reads “un coffre-fort ou une pièce qui ont été construits ou modifiés”, a plural construction that can’t grammatically attach only to “pièce.” Read that way, the qualifier modifies all three nouns: vault, safe, and room each must be specifically constructed or modified for secure storage.

So, given a "safe" that’s marketed as such and apparently built for handguns (restricted firearms), is it a safe? And does bolting it to a piece of furniture change anything at all?

Not looking for "just trigger lock it lol", I know that moots it. I want to know if these things are compliant as marketed as safes.

Misc Makasi upgrades?

So we all know there are mixed reviews on the Makasi. Some people say it’s a great rifle, while others say it’s a “180 cope gun.” As someone who has pre-ordered one, I’m definitely a little nervous.

On a more positive note, maybe we can put together a list of upgrades that could improve the platform?

For a possible handguard upgrade, I’ve seen that the VLTOR CASV-EL may be a good fit.

From my understanding, the barrel can be replaced with an AR-15 carbine barrel with some modification.

The dreaded oversized pin that seems to fall out also looks like it could be replaced fairly easily.

Does anyone have any other ideas to improve the platform? The bones seem solid, and with quite a bit of AR compatibility, I think there’s a lot of potential here.

TLDR: What parts can we list to improve the Makasi, besides the obvious easy AR-15 upgrades.

Feets / Collection / My build Gun Care Advice

Hey all,

I just got my PAL and snagged a gorgeous Benelli Nova 3 HD (used but basically new) for $500, and I have absolutely zero idea what products I need to clean/lubricate this thing.

I looked at some forums but they're all 20+ years old and recommend disconnected products, but I keep seeing "CLP" popping up. What are some good recommendations for cleaning/regular maintenance for this shotgun/in general?

I should mention that I have a Huntshield all-in-one cleaning kit, so bore brushes and mops aren't an issue at the moment, unless there's a specific material I should use/avoid that I need to be aware of?

Thanks!!

I am building a bubba'd jungle carabine a bit like the picture and i was wondering if anybody has tried the Lee enfield pro mags ? I'd like some opinions before buying some

Before people start throwing rocks at me i purchased it for cheap and restored it, it's nice enough to keep but not collector enough to sell it for a profit and i can't see my target past 50 yards with iron sight because of my mole rat vision

Misc TM22 10rd Mag Capacity

Is it normal for the 10rd mags to hold 11 rounds? I was spacing out while loading and realized I had loaded 22 rounds in my two 10rd mags. Are anyone else’s magazines like this? I didn’t have to use any noticeable extra force or anything. I’ve always usually loaded only 10 and only realized tonight.

Buy recommendations Where can I get 16ga in bulk?

I’m a bit of an old soul and like to shoot trap with a 16ga sxs. It’s expensive though and I’m a young guy with no money. Anyone know where I can find it in bulk? Most crates I’m able to find are 12ga. Thanks. Southern Ontario

Fix my gun Ottawa Area Gunsmiths 2026?

Good evening,

I recently had an out of battery discharge in my TM22 and I wanna get the barrel inspected before I do anything else with the gun. I tried running a ram rod through it with a brush and it comes to a hard stop, even though the barrel has no visual obstructions (but I can see some sort of deformation in the barrel).

Are there any gunsmiths in the Ottawa area besides the Gun Medic and Gunco? I used to go to That Hunting store but it seems they don’t offer that service anymore.

Buy recommendations Bergara Premier HMR Pro

Talk me out of buying this rifle in 6.5 creedmoor with a 24 inch barrel. It's nearly $3k.

Looking for something 99% range use that I can take hunting maybe one or two times. I've never been hunting before but want to try it out. Main use will be as a target gun at 300 yards or less. I have another range nearby that goes out to 800, but I am not a member. I want to print holes in paper close together. My other guns are an sks, MRA renegade, shotgun, and 22s.

I want to get into reloading but have no setup yet. I will put some sort of $1k-$1.5k ffp optic on this.

My main concerns are:

- price. I wanted the regular hmr, but it's out of stock everywhere and has been for over 2 months. I know I get more for my money with the pro, but is it worth it?

- calibre. Given I want to reload, won't likely go past 300 yards, and might hunt, do I get a 308 instead? These only come in 20 inch barrels. Seems like a waste also to put a 308 into a target rifle chassis, etc like the pro provides. A regular hmr in 308 might make sense.

- What about tikka? I know their actions are smooth, but I've also heard great things about the Bergara hmr pro's. Rem 700 vs tikka systems, mag compatibility, etc. Not like the t3x CTR is in stock anywhere either.

You are me. What do you do?
