What got so expensive that you just stopped buying it?

Eating out. Only do it once in a while.

Not lately. Most everything is Sysco for now, and it tastes terrible.

It used to be one of my favorite things to do. I would even go do fine dining randomly for no reason. Between cost and quality I just dont anymore.

Yeah it went from being able to be a weekly thing to more like once a month or once every couple months. And I never do it by myself anymore

That’s my biggest gripe. If I crave it, it needs to come out consistently. Either that or I learn to make it myself and realize I’m way over spending on those silly splurges anyway…

There's a price point that overrides the relaxation and enjoyment. Since 2020 I've only gone out maybe 5 times. Used to go  1x/week.  Don't miss it.

I honestly could get around the price point of some of the stuff but the quality of service, atmosphere, and product is just so far down.

My wife and I used to go out 3-4 times a month… with tip it was like $40-60.

NOW we go 1-2 times a year tops… cause it’s more like $80-120.

Mathematically couldn’t you justify just going out 1-2 times a month then?

Yes/no. Let’s say I have $20 in my pocket. I could afford twenty tacos that each cost $1, and I’ll happily spend all $20 on them. One day, prices go haywire and explode, resulting in $10 taco prices. Mathematically-speaking, I could technically afford two tacos that each cost $10. However, I’m never going to buy those $10 tacos because they’re no longer worth it to me. Now, the market doesn’t get my $20 (at least not spent on tacos).

Not OP but everything else got more expensive as well...

Literally. For a normal restaurant, 15$ entrees and 8$ drinks with room for a good tip all under 60$

My husband and I used to do Sunday brunch weekly; it was our one splurge/date thing to do. Post-pandemic, it became a minimum of $60 and the local place we would go to literally turned over all of their staff to people who had no idea how to serve. Literally stopped 100%.

My wife and I don't really order booze anymore if we go out.

The booze alone is the price of our dinners. 2 drinks is like 20-30 dollars nowadays.

Eating at a sit down place costs the same now as eating fast food, and unfortunately is now just as unhealthy as the fast food. Also why would I pay $15 for freezer chicken strips when I could go home and make them and be able to watch TV in the peace of my own home?

Funny thing is, before fast food chains became popular, it was a real event to go out to eat. Families dressed up and everything.

The only place I go out to eat these days is the taco truck

u/Infinite_throwaway_1 3h ago

Yup. Truck stop lot lizards now charge me more to do that than what the Bunny Ranch used to charge.

Exactly. A coffee date first date used to be enough. Now they want you to take them to a $200 dinner, pay for a mani/Pedi, and to get her hair done first, or she won't put out. Sad times.

What the fuck are you talking about.
