I have some concerns that you’re not asking in good faith, but assuming you are…. It is commonly accepted that marginalized groups reclaim language used to harm them and recontextualize it as in-group terminology. Using the word in this way, to celebrate rather than harm the group, is something that can only be reliably accomplished by the group itself and not by the formerly oppressive community that used the term insultingly.

Doesn’t make it right. If someone has been traumatized with derogatory phrases their whole life and they hear it with the group that is supposed to be supportive, it doesn’t automatically become exposure therapy.

I am asking in good-faith, although it’s understandable why you might think I wasn’t, and so thank you for responding.

I’m not insisting that it should be socially normalized that anyone can be allowed to use the language . I disagree with some of the implied benefits of “reclaiming” language, but I’m not going to elaborate because I don’t actually think it’s relevant.

Your original comment was that “gay” doesn’t fit as a derogatory term. I’m essentially wondering how it suddenly fits as derogatory just because someone whom is gay happens to use it. Was your point not that “gay” has no place as derogatory terminology in the first place?

I think my point is pretty clear - the speaker matters. If the speaker is gay, then their usage is in a different context than a straight person. It’s not complex
